Teaching and keeping animals foraging for their food is a top priority here at the Center. Animals are always learning. If they aren't being kept occupied, they... may be learning things we don't want them to. If they are learning things we don't want them to, then you have to counter-condition, meaning retrain. That's another whole topic. Once an animal knows how to forage, the key point is then slowly increasing the complexity in attaining that food. This is what most people don't realize when incorporating foraging in their daily plans. In this video, I'm increasing complexity by not only adding blueberries to Milo's water dish but adding complexity in the depth of the water. He could eat these blueberries in about five seconds without water. Then what? Some of the feedback we hear from people that join our online, learning Memberships is that they thought they were incorporating enough foraging and enrichment into their animal's daily lives but since joining, they realize they aren't. What they are seeing as a result of increasing these complexities through our live-streams, video library examples, and webinars is a severe reduction of behavior issues, their animals' eagerness to learn and interact, a serious reduction in self-injurious behaviors, and an increase in their animals' quality of life. When we know better, we do better. We can always do better.
