Mexico hosted their second biggest Padel event the "Internacional De Padel" event in Acapulco. That was Canada's second showing at a world sanctioned event- A fun fact: The president of the International Padel Federation Mr. Julio Alegria and Bill Stamile, President and founder of Padel Canada teamed up to win the Over 40 event.
First Tri-National event between Mexico-USA-Canada. Our boys did very well ending with a hard fought and exciting third place match win by Peter Smythe and Steve Kirk.
Padel in the early 90's was well covered by a range of Padel Magazines... below are copies of a few of them... featuring some legend Padel athletes as well.
Bill Stamile graduated from the Prac-Paddle Academy run by the worlds top teacher and coach Mr. Jorge Nicolini. The History of Padel in Canada The sport of padel in Canada had its beginnings in Calgary, Alberta. The sport was founded in Canada by Bill Stamile, who first saw the game played while on vacation in Argentina in 1992. He established the National Padel Association in February 1992, as a federally incorporated Canadian Registered Amateur Athletic Association. The first Padel court was built in mid-1992 by Bill and his brother, Angelo inside a Calgary warehouse, which operated... for nearly one year. The court was used to attract some of Calgary’s top tennis and squash players, many of whom still play the game today. In May 1993, the first Padel team representing Canada internationally played the Corcuera Cup in Acapulco, Mexico. During this high-profile event, Canada was invited to join the International Padel Federation. Over the last 28 years, Bill was instrumental in planning, organizing and training adult and junior team Canada players that participated in over a dozen International Padel Federation sanctioned events. Our most successful placing was during the 2009 World Junior Padel Championships in Seville Spain where the junior boys placed an incredible third in the world. Bill has been actively involved in promoting the sport of Padel to Canadians through a series of clinics, orientations, tournaments and special events. Recently Bill was invited to join the board of the Canadian Pad-L Sport Federation (CPSF) and is fully involved in the Canada-wide initiative to re-start the work of growing and promoting Padel. He has attracted interested parties in our country’s 4 largest cities (Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal) to establish and expand our sport. The CPSF is now in the process of working through the formal petition process for official affiliation into the International Padel Federation. See more
