Seal Fishery Closing: Annual closure to allow time for seal whelping and nursing. DFO advises that both the Commercial fishery and Personal Use fishery for Harp seals and Hooded seals will close in all areas to all seal harvesters and all fleets based in Newfoundland and Labrador at 2000 hours on Monday, March 15, 2021. This is the annual closure to allow time for seal whelping and nursing.... Re-opening dates for the 2021 season for these Seal fisheries, in both the Gulf and on the Front, will be announced at a later date. The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2021-002 has been revoked and Variation Order 2021-013 comes into effect on March 10, 2021. "Notices to Fish Harvesters" for all commercial fisheries are now available online under the Fishery Notices link on the DFO NL Region webpage at http://www.nfl.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/e0004341
For too long, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has remained complacent while evidence mounts that an overpopulation of seals is having a serious imp...act on important fish species in Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Atlantic Canada. DEMAND ACTION ON SEAL OVERPOPULATION! The time is long overdue for our government to protect important fish species and prevent catastrophe. This lack of action is already being felt by fish harvesters and coastal communities. It’s crucial that we take action before the impacts cannot be reversed. It's Monday and it's #SealFact Day! Kicking off the week with a fascinating fact about whiskers. Seals have up to 1 500 nerve endings in each whisker (a cat or ...rat has about 200) and these super-sensitive whiskers are important to help seal detect food in murky water. #Seal Canadian Sealers Association
