Message from Cyndi McLeod, GUS Canada CEO There is no doubt that the past 12 months have been challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world in ways we never imagined millions of people have lost loved ones, lost their livelihoods and been separated from extended families, friends and loved ones. With all these challenges, it is easy to lose sight of the importance of the fight to achieve gender equality. However, the fallout from the pandemic has highlighted just... how far we still need to go. The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed women’s participation in the labour force to its lowest level in 30 years. Just as many women and men lost their jobs in the initial months of the pandemic, however, women are not returning to work at the same rate as men. There are still one million fewer women working in Canada. As a woman who has spent the better part of the last three decades fighting to earn a seat at the table and working to empower women in the workplace, I find this disheartening. But I am also inspired. Women deserve better. Throughout my career, I have spearheaded initiatives aimed at empowering women in higher education and business. In 2015, I helped establish Glow Ed Global Women in Education, a non-profit professional network of women in international education. Last year, at University Canada West, we started the Women in Leadership MBA Award. I personally led this initiative, and UCW invested half a million dollars in further education for women. We now have 17 women financially supported in completing their MBA degrees, and more will be joining their ranks later this year. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge. So, I am challenging my peers CEOs and executives at other institutions here in Canada and around the world to not only talk about the issue of gender equality but to do something about it. Give a woman a seat at the table in the C-suite, offer more flexible work hours, or provide more networking, mentoring and coaching opportunities to women. The safest and smartest decision a company can make is to invest in its women. That is something we have done at Global University Systems Canada, putting more women in leadership positions. In fact, more than two-thirds of the senior leadership team are women. As a result, we saw our organization grow like never before in 2020. When you invest in women, you invest in the future of your company. #cctb #internationalwomensday2021 #IWD2021 #ChooseToChallenge
