During the heavy fighting of the Second Battle of Arras, Canadians suffered significant losses but broke the Drocourt-Quéant Line on 2 September 1918 and forced... an enemy withdrawal behind the Hindenburg Line. No fewer than seven Victoria Crosses were awarded to Canadians on this day 102 years ago. Today in France, a wreath was laid at the foot of the Canadian Memorial in Dury that commemorates this important victory on the road to the peace. #CanadaRemembers http://ow.ly/6Vi250BgcYv See more

Extraordinary photograph taken on the Western Front during WW1. Cavalrymen resting in a shell hole and waiting for the order to move up. The legs of the horses ...are very muddy. Lest We Forget. Photograph came from the National Library Of Scotland.

27-28 August 1918-Soldiers of the 22nd Battalion suffered heavy losses in the fighting near Chérisy,France during the First World War. http://ow.ly/U6lA50B8LIz ... The 22nd Battalion was Canada’s only French speaking regiment to serve on the front lines during the First World War. It saw heavy action throughout the conflict, fighting in famous battles at places like the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendaele. Its bloodiest day of the entire war came during the final months of the conflict when they were sent into action at Chérisy. Of the some 675 officers and men who took part in the attack in late August 1918, 105 would be killed and 200 wounded. Pictured is the war painting Over the Top, Neuville-Vitasse by Alfred Bastien, depicting the 22nd Battalion in action near Chérisy. #CanadaRemembers 15-25 August 1917-Canada took part in the bitter Battle of Hill 70 in northern France during the First World War. http://ow.ly/bnys50AZOZP That... summer, the Canadian Corps captured the strategically located Hill 70 and then proceeded to secure the western portion of the nearby town of Lens. A lot of ground was gained and the Germans suffered many causalities, but it came at a high price with the Canadian Corps seeing some 9,200 men killed, wounded or taken prisoner in the fighting there. Sorry to hear of the passing of Major Colin Brown. Enlisting at 17 and eager to get into the action, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlander was one of 600 Canadians rushed into action as a loan to the British Army’s Argyll’s 15th Scottish Division. He recalled in an interview how while defending a bridgehead they made creative use of some Bofors guns to stop an enemy counterattack- you can listen to it on the @memory_project website. He was a career military man, finally retiring in 1974 to work for Environment Canada.
