Canadian Deck Masters 28.02.2021

Hope everyone is loving summer finally and enjoying their outdoor living space especially in these unusual times, it’s more important than ever! Once I realized the benefits of The Medicine Hat Home and Trade Show, I approached the Trex company asking if they would be interested in supplying us with the material to build a one of a kind trade show booth for the Calgary Home Show. The deck would be 20x10 two stories with a curved staircase that could be taken apart and pu...t together in only 4 hours. They responded - they didn’t think this design would be possible. So I made the decision to take on the challenge and risk building the frame work and show them with our skill and expertise it was! I can’t believe that a deck builder from Medicine Hat, AB. was able to reach out to a world wide publicly traded company; but once they saw the video of what we had accomplished and with the support their rep Wayne, Trex decided we were worth the investment and ended up sending us the material we needed to complete the booth. The trade show booth was a great success, it garnered lots of interest and produced a number of unique deck projects in Calgary and the surrounding area. Trex offered an extensive array of products and always backed their warranty for their products and supported builders big or small and were privileged to work with them....

Once we received our first national recognition in the magazine article and some projects completed from the trade show, we built a couple of small projects while working of some outdoor living space designs. A lot of forethought goes into our outdoor living space and design... which way the sun covers your deck at different times; how many people do you entertain; what do you use your outdoor living space for primarily, BBQ, reading, suntanning, relaxing, accessibility, ki...ds or no kids incorporating planters, etc. We always wanted to make sure we could provide our clients with exactly what they wanted! Utilizing composite decking products allowed us to mold and adapt unique features built in to a custom design for each customer. With a deck that would last for 25 years plus and once built, needed little to no maintenance and capable of withstanding the harsh winters and hot summers in Canada . A simple quick clean up in the spring and it is back to its original look.

Ok, let’s keep this trip down memory lane rolling; After the the first major outdoor space was completed and a news article appeared on the front page of the Medicine Hat News paper - drawing attention to the uniqueness of our work. We started receiving so many calls for new projects, with special requirements. Even though we built regular decks as well- it was the custom designed ones that allowed us to explore our creativity for design and enjoy building it. ... At this time I was also talking with some great people in Toronto that published a magazine called Renovation Contractor well recognized in the industry. To my surprise they asked me for an interview for their Hot Off The Press article for the September 2012 issue. Once I did the interview, little did I know that would turn out to be a two page spread on my companies. In addition the magazine invited me to attend the first ever Renovation Contractor Roundtable Conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This trip and show proved extremely beneficial to me through networking contacts and two of the presenters changed the way I looked at myself and how I did business. One was on the psychology of sales and the second was about social media and marketing. I also got a chance to meet up with an old friend from when I owned a bar/nightclub. I came home with a new outlook on how we did business and man did it really help in booking projects. Customers were lining up for our one of a kind custom designed decks. I still utilize the knowledge I learned there today for sales!
