One of the best parts of working at the Hydroplane Museum is the unexpected treasure that shows up from time to time. I came back from lunch a couple of weeks a...go and someone had left a small stack of slides on my desk. An anonymous donor had dropped them off while I was out. They are from Seafair 1956. The first three show the Detroit teams gathering at the Hill Top Inn after their long cross country haul. The next four are of the California teams preparing their boats at Bryant Marina and the last two show the race day crowd. See more

The George Woods story This page has already published part of the story about one of the greats of boat racing, George Woods, and with the collaboration of his... wife of 49 years, Lynda, it was possible to assemble allthe details about the Sumner (Washington) resident’s impressive career as a driver and engine builder. His accomplishments at the wheel of flat bottom boats and hydroplanes are just remarquable. This article will be a long one but if you are a fan of boat racing, take the time to read it and see awesome pictures never seen before on the East coast of the north american continent. After many years in outboards and drag boats, George Woods drove his first flat bottom in 1971 with the Underdog SK-108 owned by Al Lapointe and in which he won the SK class western divisional championship. He race the boat from 1971 to 1975 before stepping up to the KRR class with the same owner, Al Lapointe. From 1976 to 1978, George broke records driving the Can-Am Express K-23. On November 26th 1977, he established a new kilo mark in Parker (Arizona) at the speed of 144,386 milles per hour. On July 9th 1978, George pushed the K-23 to a record average speed of 105,079 m/h (1 mile 2/3 course) at Black Lake, near Olympia (Washington), after winning the western divisionals. George went on to drive for Ed Trihey in the Pro Comp class with the PC-20 and the KRR class, the new Bad Company K-22. From 1979 to 1983, he had much success with that boat, placing 2nd in high points and at the western divisionals in 1981 and reaching the world record speed of 110,497 m/h in 1982 at Lawrence Lake in Yelm (Washington). In 1983, march 27th, George broke his own mark at the western divisionals on the 1 2/3 mile course at Lawrence Lake, flying the Bad Company K-22 to an average speed of 114, 068 m/h, a mark that has never been beated. The Santa Barbara (California) native walked into the Hall of Champions in 1978 and also in 1981, as he also broke two records in the 6 liters class with his own Shogun F-23. He did it at Black Lake, speeding to 101,580 m/h average on Saturday July 11th and upgrading his own mark the next day at 103,448 m/h average pour 3 laps on the 1 2/3 mile course. In 1982, George Woods was national champion in the Super Stock class with Ed Rennel’s Predator SS-41. Two years later, he drove Ed Rennel’s 6 liters boat (5 L at the time), the Take-N-Five F-51. He established a world record on April 14th 1984 at Haag Lake (Oregon), 114,940 m/h average on the 1 2/3 mile course, and winning the Western divisionals. While participating in some 7 liters competition in 1984, George won the Eastern divisionals in the SK class in 1985 with Dave Vilwock’s Good Vibrations SK-40. That same year and in 1986, George drove the Outlaw K-39 sponsored by the Imperial Palace Hotel, for Butch Jensen of Las Vegas (Nevada). He won the US High points championship in 1985 and with a new boat, was constantly in the Top 3 in 1986. George was 2nd in High points in 1987 et did a new record of 96,391 m/h on the 1 mile course in Castaic Lake (California). That same year, he was named rookie of the year in the Unlimited class, driving Jim Harvey’s Oh Boy Oberto U-2, earning a 3rd place in the final at Seattle (Washington) and a 4th position in his first race in Pasco (Wash.) In 1988, George had a spectacular crash at the 50th Valleyfield Regatta but still managed to obtain a Canadian speed record on the 1 mile course. He won the Unlimited final in Miami (Florida) and did the same in San Diego with the Oh Boy Oberto U-2. He went on in 1989 to drive the War Eagle K-777 owned by George Hauser and Phil Stock and became in 1990 the Jif presents Mr. Pringles U-8 driver for Bill Wurster, accumulating 2nd and 3rd place finishes. George was 2nd in the Gold Cup final with the U-8 in 1991, this for a second year in a row. He was in the Top 4 all year and got 3rd place in the Unlimited high points championship. In 1992, George was 2nd in the Gold Cup final and won it all at Seafair in Seattle (Wash.), driving the nice Tide U-8 boat. Disaster truck in 1993 when George crashed in the Tide boat during a testing run in Kansas City (Missouri). He was badly injured, breaking his back, left ankle and blowing the PCL of one knee. George had to do a 2 years rehab, was in a wheel chair for 6 monts and retired form boat racing. From 1993 to 2002, George devoted these years to his two daughters, Sheri Woods, now 45, and Shana Emry, now 40, who did competition in dragster race cars. He came back in 2003 to drive for the Unlimited Light Frauenheim/Bononcini team (UL-72, UL-51). He would win yet another HP championship, the 6th of his career, in the UL class. From 2004 to 2008, George drive Sid Rinnels’ Super Stock boat and mentored young racers. In 2007, he established records in the SS (102,763 m/h) and Pro Stock (111,73 m/h) classes for Dave and Pam Vilwock in the Good Vibrations boat at Lawrence Lake. George Woods’ swan song came in 2008 when he crashed in the Good Vibrations SS-40. He still holds the KRR 1 2/3 mile record (114,068 m/h) and the PC record (111,173 m/h). While being a great driver, the certified union mechanic was also an engine builder. Engineer for automotive commercial trucks and equipment, he later did commercial truck sales and designs for the Havester GMC and Kenworth companies. Now retired at the age of 70, George also owned George Auto & Marine, building cars and boats for himself and others. I don’t mind bragging about my guy. He was a fantastic racer and I am proud of his accomplishments. George is quite my hero, especially building engines. He is the best, acknowliged wife Lynda Woods. Pictures are from Journal Saint-François archives, Jeff Ayler, Leonard Dootot and Woods family collection.
