With the passing into law today of Bill-C97, Canadian immigration and citizenship consultants can look forward to being members of a Federally-regulated profession, established by statute. This, among other benefits, will give the future College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants the power to address the issue of unauthorized practitioners which has in the past caused so much damage to the public.
Bill-C97 receives Royal assent
Blip in Express Entry program raises minimum CRS score to 470? A draw was held yesterday without limitation as to the category in which Express Entry candidates qualified. The minimum score required for an Invitation to Apply yesterday was 470. Since the last time a draw of this type took place was 4 weeks ago, rather than the usual 2 weeks, more people have come into the pool than usually occurs between rounds of invitations. There was indeed a draw 2 weeks ago, as usually... happens, but that draw was solely for Federal Skilled Trades. People with scores above 470 are no longer in the pool. So if a round including the Federal Skilled Worker category occurs in 2 weeks, as we expect, the likelihood is the minimum required score to obtain an Invitation to Apply will drop fairly significantly. Of course, if the government waits until 3 weeks have elapsed to have the next round of invitations, more people with high scores will come into the pool, and in that situation the drop in the minimum required score is likely to be less significant. Biometrics Currently, foreign nationals from Europe, Asia, and Africa need to give biometrics (i.e. to provide fingerprints and have their photograph taken) when applying for any type of visa for Canada. Exemptions are persons who are visa-exempt (they require an eTa), and persons in possession of a valid US green card. The program is scheduled to be rolled out to all other countries beginning December 31, 2018. persons applying in-Canada for work and study permits are exempt until such time as offices open up within Canada to take their biometrics.
Government of Canada to issue up to 350,000 permanent resident visas next year. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada yesterday announced plans to increase the number of new immigrants the country will accept. The target is to accept a number equal to approximately 1 percent of Canada 's population in 2019, with the trend expected to continue for the 2 years that follow.
Canada improves sponsorship program for parents and grandparents Ron Liberman of Best Place Immigration Inc. commented positively on the Trudeau government's effective reinstatement of the prior sponsorship program for parents and grandparents. "These are welcome changes" Mr Liberman said. "The concept of a 'lottery' system for grandparents and parents left many permanent residents and citizens of Canada in the situation where they were uncertain if their parents or grandpar...ents would be able to immigrate, even though they had the funds to support them in Canada. In some instances, parents or grandparents might be widowed and have no other family to support them in their home country or elsewhere in the world. Regardless, these deserving parents or grandparents were effectively subject to the spin of a roulette wheel to decide if they would be allowed to live with their children in Canada. Additionally, the much-vaunted 'Supervisa" system introduced by the former Minister of Immigration, Jason Kelly, was subject to the vagaries of interpretation by Canada Border Services Agency. Although initially hailed as a system whereby parents would be admitted for up to 2 years at a time for a 10 year period, CBSA took it upon themselves to interpret this as meanings that parents and grandparents would be admitted for up to 2 years on their initial entry, but subsequent entries were limited to the usual time limit of 6 months. The situation was further complicated by some visa posts overseas failing to encode the visas they issued as being in the parent and grandparent category, with the result that, despite having done the additional work required to support a Supervisa application, children in Canada found their parents were only being admitted for 6 months on the initial entry". Best Place Immigration lauds IRCC's decision to revert to the previous system, whereby applicants who are diligent and supply a complete perfected application when the program opens up can have their application accepted. Sponsors will still have to qualify by demonstrating enough income, but up to 20,500 applications will be accepted next year in this category, followed by 21,000 the following year. If this trend continues, the backlog of 95,000 parents and grandparents wanting to immigrate and be with their children in Canada will likely be eliminated within 4 or 5 years.

Happy Canada Day!
Shorter Timeframe for perfecting Express Entry PR applications The Government immigration department has announced that applicants will have only 60 days, rather than 90 days, to supply all necessary documents and do their medical after receiving an ITA. All the more reason to start prepare the documents you will need for your application when you begin the process.
