FREE Writing & English Help for ALL Canadore Students The Writing Help Desk is a general writing, English, and academic skills help desk where all Canadore students can get assistance with writing projects, APA, presentations, as well as grammar, pronunciation, and any English usage questions. The Canadore Alumni congratulates Susan Hay on her appointment to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest honour for individuals who have shown outstanding qualities of individual excellence and achievement in any field. Susan graduated from Canadore’s Executive Secretarial program in 1980, but she is best known as a TV broadcaster and producer with Global News for more than 30 years. This is the latest honour Susan has received in recognition of her hard work to brin...g to life the stories of inspirational people in Canada and around the world. Susan has remained a good friend and supporter of Canadore and the Alumni throughout the years. Canadore College recognized her many outstanding accomplishments by presenting here with an Honourary Diploma in Communication Arts in 1999, and nominating her for a 2007 Premier’s Awards for Ontario Graduates. Susan was inducted into the North Bay Walk of Fame in 2012, and the North Bay Musicians and Entertainers Hall of Recognition in 2015. Transgender Day of Remembrance is recognized each year on November 20th serves as an opportunity to mourn and honour the lives lost in our community and beyond due to transphobic violence, as well to raise public awareness for those who face public indifference, hatred, and who are victims of hate crime associated with transphobia and cissexism. Trans Day of Remembrance originally began as a candlelit vigil to honour the death of trans woman Rita Hester who was killed in 199...8. The single event became an entire movement for the trans community and is now observed internationally. Although not everyone we remember on TDOR may have self-identified as trans or gender non-conforming, they are all connected by the violence and bias that resulted in the loss of their life. You can find more information, including the list of people being memorialized this year, at: http://tdor.info Key Terms: Transgender People whose gender identity does not correlate with the gender they were assigned at birth. Transgender people may identify with another specific gender than the one they were assigned, or embrace a more fluid or nonbinary identity. It’s important to respect trans people’s pronouns and identity. Cisgender People whose gender identity matches the gender they were assigned at birth. For example, if when you were born, doctors said you were female, and you still identify as female, you are a cisgender or cis woman. Transphobia/Cissexism Transphobia is a set of discriminatory beliefs against transgender people, which can inspire cissexism. Cissexism is discriminatory behaviour or policies that privilege cisgender people and oppress trans people.
