Homesteading trick and tip The most annoying part about owning chickens or any animal feed in the barn is keeping Mice and Rats away. The bucket trap can be used openly just about everywhere, the worst that may happen is your kid or dog licking off the peanut butter ... Take a bucket and fill it with a few inches of water. Then put a wire from a coat hanger across the bucket such as seen in the attached picture. Have the wire run through a plastic bottle, soda can, piece of PVC pipe Etc basicaly anything that easily spins. The key is whatever you use needs to be able to easily spin on the wire. Smear some peanut butter or cheese whiz on to the plastic bottle or whatever you are using and lean a stick up against the bucket for the rats or mice to use as a ramp to get on top of the bucket. The mice/rats will jump onto the bottle and lose their balance falling into the bucket. If you use just a little water the varmints won't drown but still won't be able to get out of the bucket and you can just get rid of them else where.
