Canines in the Community 20.04.2021

Having fun with this little Hendrix teaching him some foundation foundation skills for agility. Added music for fun. He is learning to target a jump and run between the upright poles. No jump bar needed at this stage. Im working in various positions around the jump to generalize his understanding. Goodest boi <3.

5 years ago today we were down in Texas training. Maverick having fun working on the long jump used in French Ring. We never got to try competing in the sport as Maverick was gun shy but we had lots of fun learning the components for sport. On an aside, sending so much love to our friends down in Texas who are struggling with massive power outages, freezing temperatures in houses not made with the kind of insulation we have in Canada and burst pipes and dying livestock withou...t water because of frozen and burst pipes during this winter storm. #Caninesinthecommunity #dogtraining #alberta

More fun training games today. Hendrix and I are working through Susan Garretts: "Success with one Jump" DVD. In this game he is learning to switch arms and to be called off one direction of travel when new information is given (new arm/ new direction of travel). We are brand new to agility but we are having fun. Hes a fun dog to work <3

Fun weekend of training with Jessica and Luna. When I met Luna for the first time and then had her for low stress boarding I had some fairly major concerns about her recall and what that would mean for Luna's safety if she ever escaped her yard or home or slipped a collar or leash. Luna is a typical fun loving young Bernese Mountain Dog full of spunk and fun. Lunas favorite game was deek out and run away and you can't catch me even when in a relatively small fenced in outdoo...r kennel run and especially when out playing in the large fenced in dog field at our place. Luna and I began working on recall games with high value rewards and also introduced the e collar with her owners permission. Luna was on track to being hit and killed by a car with her behavior. When it comes to e collars, I will always stand behind the right to use them humanely because id much rather apply a momentary unpleasant sensation:a correction, then loose my dog to being hit by a car. You dont get a second chance when the consequences of not recalling are serious injury or death. Luna and her owner and I have been working hard with 90% positive reinforcement (high value treats and lots for them) and 10% correction when needed on the e collar. Luna is doing soo good and my heart no longer worries about her in the way it did when I first met her. I use e collar technology brand for my dogs as we live near a major highway and have stray cats that get dumped at times. I rarely need to use the collar but it is there as back up. As always in training we are aiming to set the dogs up for success. You dont just slap an e collar on and start correcting. We are always starting with rewards to build and maintain a behavior (in this case come when called. Also referred to as recall). For myself personally I never want to rely on more then 10-20% correction and only after using alot of rewards first. Rewards are ultimately what build and maintain behavior. Corrections (something unpleasant) are only there to condition the dog to not find a certain behavior rewarding. (In this case running away from us, chasing scents, ignoring recall cue, deeking us out, playing keep away).

Unpopular opinion in today's trend on what people envision doing with there dogs. Your dog will naturally become more dog selective as they age. Training can help them navigate the world and learn to be calm while ignoring other dogs. Your dog might have cherished dog friends in there life, but its ok if they dont.

Sunday morning enrichment for our puppy Lucy "Lucifer" (nickname for the amount of hell she likes to raise around the house lol). Lucy has two stuffed kongs. One featuring 50% fish based kibble and 50% turkey wet food and one featuring 100% turkey wet food. As well some scattered kibble for when shes done. Kongs and positive based crate training can give you the peace of mind you need while you drink your first coffee when you live with a high energy dog or adolescent dog or wild child pupper. <3.

Lucy and Maverick Lucy is a spitfire puppy who is turning the big 1 next week!! Maverick shreds blankets which eaten can cause a blockage so he doesnt get beds when crated. He sleeps free, and he loves his crate and chooses it. I shut the door to protect him from the helliom puppy featured center front lol.

Low stress boarding means spending the time daily helping our boarders feel happy and settled <3. In addition to offering private boarding (only your dogs) in our kennel shop, I spend time daily hanging in the kennel shop with them (out of kennel contactless if dog isn't comfortable), daily hikes and playtime as well as canine enrichment toys like stuffed kongs. <3 Hanging in the kennel shop or kennel run (if dog is comfortable) especially helps dogs feel at home, when away from home.
