A recently concluded clinical trial found evidence that "extremely low and precise doses" THC can be used as an effective pain reliever while avoiding the "common [psychoactive] side effects" normally associated with cannabis use. This reinforces the ideology that THC, in combination with CBD, can and should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for patients when applicable. At five-years-old, Alfie Dingley was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy called PCDH19 which caused him to have upwards of 150 seizures a month. His mother Hannah feared for the future of her family and began researching the different uses of medical cannabis to help her son. After the family fundraised money to travel to Holland so Alfie could be treated with medical cannabis, he went from daily seizures to 41 days with no seizures at all. Finally, the family had hope. A...lfie became the first patient in the UK to receive a permanent cannabis license and stands as an impeccable example of the benefits of medical cannabis. A new study has found that CBD is effective in treating heroin addiction; given to patients with heroin addiction, cannabidiol, also known as CBD, reduced their cravings for the illicit drug as well as their levels of anxiety. "The intense craving is what drives the drug use," says Yasmin Hurd, the lead researcher on the study and director of the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai. Many medical cannabis physicians tend to focus on CBD as opposed to THC when prescribing. However, it is thought that all of the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant work together to create what scientists call the entourage effect. The famous quote a whole is greater than the sum of its parts perfectly describes this idea; THC, CBD, and other components of the plant-like terpenes (which add flavour) and flavonoids (which add colour) create new, greater effects to the body w...hen consumed together. As opposed to focusing on one singular component of the plant for healing, physicians should instead consider the whole plant for different treatment plans; this is how we prescribe at CannaWay Clinic. A combination of CBD and THC is often thought to be more effective in treatment than one of these compounds alone. How might terpenes contribute to the ‘entourage effect’ of cannabis? The entourage effect is the idea that THC and CBD work hand in hand to provide therapeutic relief, meaning that the whole cannabis plant together is greater than the sum of its parts. And new research is pointing to terpenes playing a roll in the entourage effect as well. Read Leafly's summary of the entourage effect, and how terpenes might play a significant roll. ... http://bit.ly/375KKbw
