CanNorth Office is a Test Site for a Novel Decontamination System for the Virus that Causes COVID-19! Geosyntec Consultants Inc. has partnered with Ground Effects Environmental Services Inc. to develop decontamination equipment to safely and reliably raise building atmosphere ozone concentrations to a predetermined and precise target virus-treatment concentration. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, does not survive high ozone concentrations. After the ozone concent...ration is maintained, the levels are quickly reduced to non-detect. Advantages of this method are it is more comprehensive than wiping, spraying, or fogging, it does not leave a dangerous chemical residue like some other disinfection methods, and it does not require handling of regulated and often hazardous materials. This technology is being deployed under the name Sanozone. The partnership has also developed a way to use the equipment to produce low concentration liquid-phase ozone that can be applied using sprayers or power washers to various locations, such as subway landings, outdoor dining and common areas, benches, handrails, floors, streets, and various other surfaces. Liquid-phase virus disinfection is currently used for virus disinfection in a number of industries and, with modest safety considerations, may be safely applied in occupied spaces or with temporary access controls. CanNorth is proud to be a test site for this innovative technology! For more information please contact Sean Frisky or Trevor Carlson ([email protected])

Our company is filled with talented people, and we would to love to share some of their photography, and to do so we're going to be featuring wildlife and staff members alike for #wildlifewednesday and #fieldworkfriday! These weekly posts will give a little bit of insight into some of the great work we do. We've got lots of great field photos to share, starting with Laura Mess's photo, which features some cam-owl-uflage: 'Short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) are one of the most ...widely distributed owls and likely the most diurnal owl in the world. They're found on every continent except for Antarctica and Australia. They can also be found on Oceanic islands and there's even a subspecies in Hawai'i. They're a bird of open spaces such as prairies and marshes. Due to habitat preference they're also ground nesters, making depressions on the ground in tall grass or under shrubs. The nest may be lined with grass and downy feathers. Their 'ears' are small tufts of feathers that are not often visible, but they're identifiable by their round head, dark eyeliner, and bright yellow eyes. Right now they're nesting throughout Saskatchewan and every other province and territory in Canada. If you happen to come near the nest, they might pretend to be injured to lure you away, similar to the strategy used by killdeer. But if you're respectful, they might invite you to a nice meadow vole supper with the family.' Stay tuned for next week, when we feature a furry friend.

Check out this podcast about research CanNorth and Alyse Kambeitz conducted! From Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (IEAM): Do no harm: Evaluating non-lethal fish sampling, with Alyse Kambeitz... The goal of any environmental monitoring program is to assess and protect the health of the organisms being monitored. Yet the most common methods require the sacrifice of a large number of individuals to collect enough data to ensure the well-being of the entire population. A new study published in IEAM set out to find a better way to monitor fish populations in Canadian waters affected by mining activity. We spoke with lead author Alyse Kambeitz to hear more. See more

On Monday, October 28th, CanNorth staff attended an Aboriginal Awareness seminar by Saskatoon-based consultant John Lagimodiere of Aboriginal Consultant Services (ACS). Impressively condensing hundreds of years of history, John provided CanNorth staff with an overview of the history and challenges facing Indigenous people in Canada. He unpacked complex topics like taxation, land claims, Treaties, and the Indian Act. John discussed the history of residential schools in Saskatchewan and provided pathways for reconciliation in the province. The seminar was humorous, relaxed, and extremely informative for all of CanNorth staff.
