As everyone prepares for boating season, there are plenty of great career opportunities. Pass it on if you know of anyone!
Great to see the yacht building industry in BC starting to thrive again. Congratulations Crescent Custom Yachts and Victoria International Marina
Bundle up, we're in for cold few days!
It's time to start thinking about this year's boating season and the Vancouver International Boat Show is a great place to start! This year's show is going online - that's right, a virtual boat show where you can safely attend from the comfort of home at no charge! Canoe Cove will be there so click below to register (did we mention it's free?), mark your calendar for February 24-27 and come and visit us in our booth. We look forward to seeing you there! #vancouverboatshow #boatingbc #lifeisbetteronaboat
We're lucky to have these giants of the sea returning to our waterways in such large numbers. Boaters should understand their habits and be aware of them. They are oblivious to boats and a whole lot bigger!
Tugs are such an important part of our maritime history - wonderful to see this old girl being restored for her centennial.
There's a gale warning in effect in the Strait of Georgia today, this evening and tomorrow. Think twice before heading out - and if you plan to travel by ferry, check BCFerries for a list of cancellation notifications.
The Beachcombers is a BC classic - wonderful to see the Persephone is being restored.
As we approach the end of 2020, we celebrate 100 years of Canoe Cove. It has been a century since a marina was first established on our site, and it's been a long and storied journey to where we are today.
Transport Canada is looking for input from boaters about potential changes to the pleasure craft licensing system including a potential new fee. The link is included in the post below.
If you're heading to Sidney Island, you'll want to check out this access update first!
Fascinating and little known history about early settlers in the Gulf Islands.
Hard to believe it’s that time already.
Airing this Sunday - this series retells stories about marine incidents and what we can do to prevent them moving forward. We’ll be watching!
Another great BC boating story, new on the blog!
Another unfortunate consequence of the pandemic, the 2021 Vancouver International Boat Show has been cancelled.
GALATEA COMES HOME This fall Kevin Campbell brought Galatea, a 40’ yawl, to Canoe Cove for her regular haul out and servicing. Galatea’s been coming here for regular maintenance since Kevin purchased her in 2006 and, while she is one of hundreds of boats brought to the Cove each year, this one is special. Galatea was designed by Dr. Thomas Harrison Butler, and built in 1931 by Hugh Rodd, Canoe Cove Shipyard Ltd’s founder, right here on the same site we sit today. She has remained in BC for her almost 90 years and has been enjoyed by an estimated 11 owners. Read the full article: https://www.canoecovemarina.com/galatea-comes-home/
If you know anyone who is taking marine mechanical training at BCIT or VIU this year, they may be interested in applying for a Glenn Spartz Scholarship from Boating BC. Up to $2,000 is available for each successful applicant and the deadline for applications is this Friday.
Passing it along in case anyone is interested.
