THE RIVER OF NO RETURN, by Reta Boychuk Some of her most treasured memories are paddling on the Main Salmon River in Idaho in 2013. This was her first raft as...sisted multi-day tour where she committed to being on board or at least she tried! Reta shares her most vivid stories with us from this trip. At the end of September we pulled a Main Salmon River Permit. 8 days, 80 miles, of easy paddling or so we thought. A little SUP’ing, a little rafting and a little fun... As we’re getting loaded to head to the river there's rumours of a big mudslide upstream on the Main Salmon. We were expecting clear low water at the put-in, instead we had raging chocolate milk. I had never seen chocolate milk that wasn’t in a carton before! It was the most insane thick, silty and loud river I had ever stood in. The clear Middle Fork Salmon River coming in was low and clear compared to the one we were putting in on, it was a stark contrast. My jitters were heightened, even though I started the trip super proud wearing clothes instead of my drysuit. This was soon rectified as I rode a floppy taco down the river swimming more than I paddled sometimes. My inflatable sup pump broke at the start, having to use a raft pump with no gauge on it we attempted to fill my SUP to the PSI it required, which still wasn’t high enough. As soon as the group loads and pushes off we hit a massive wave train at the start, full commitment paddle I send it standing! All I remember from the first rapid after falling in is, laughing. Laughing so hard that I couldn’t get back on my board because I was so happy and having the best time on the biggest waves of my life. Too much fun being in warm chocolate milk. As I made my way back on my board it was the start of an epic adventure. I couldn’t stand the whole way so I canoed while kneeling employing my canoe skills to paddle around obstacles. Picture kneeling and paddling a saggy thermarest on the river, that’s essentially what my board was. I swam most of the rapids, I cleaned a few. Pulling over at the Barth Hot Springs and soaking on the river's edge in hot water was an unusual paddling experience I will remember forever. After splashing through Black Creek Rapid on my sloppy paddle board it was nice to relax and melt into hot springs. On the layover days we had fun, this was the first time our raft crew had paddled on the river with a SUP. Our one camp on a big sandy beach had everyone taking turns playing in a giant eddy on the paddle board. Hiking upstream and floating down on the SUP repeatedly similar to tobogganing in winter, except this was a whole lot warmer and more fun! My hope is to provide more of these epic adventures up here in Canada, with numerous trips planned in the future. Catch her at @retasends on Instagram to follow her epic personal adventures and @canrvrsup to see the stoke being spread on the water through courses offered this year. Reach out to us today!
