Former international students in Canada who hold a work permit that has expired or is expiring are being offered a very unique opportunity due to the pandemic! ... The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marco Mendicino, announced yesterday (January 8, 2021) that persons in this category will now be able to apply for an open work permit to allow them to remain in Canada longer. The government believes that this will give the student graduates the opportunity to continue to live, work and contribute to Canada’s economy. Prior to this, the rule was that post graduate work permit holders had no way of extending their work permits in Canada unless they apply for a bridging work permit (permanent residence application usually must be pending to facilitate this). With the struggle to find qualifying jobs amidst a pandemic, many PGWP holders have been left in a difficult position. Numerous petitions about this were started online - garnering thousands of signatures from students, employees and concerned citizens across Canada. To be eligible for this program, applicants must meet certain requirements! Applications will be open from January 27 to July 27, 2021.
