Is a painting a question or an answer? Tips for ‘creative figure painting’ at @canvasmethod. Take an old painting that is neither here n’or there (ie. an unfinished portrait), and play with it, allowing the experimentation to spill into ‘precious’ areas. Watch for that moment when an unexpected question arrives, what if this could be this way, what if? When the question arrives, stop painting, look at it quietly, be with it, let it be. If you proceed, keep the tension of ...‘what if?’ alive. Then stop before the question fades into an answer. Revisiting ideas and creative processes from 2005-2008, when the body itself formed the architecture of each composition, and concepts dwelled within psychological states of being. Each piece began with an imaginary drawing of figures in space, intuitively choreographed to communicate some elusive feeling about touch, connection with oneself, and our inter-connectedness. Once the arrangement of the figures felt ‘right’, I would work from observational drawing from the live m...odel, attempting to place them within these gestural poses a little bit like a puppet master. Bringing together drawing and painting materiality, weaving in and out of abstraction and realism, and allowing my ideas to be held lightly All made for an exciting creative process at that time of my life, in the very beginning of my painting career.
