CAPA presents via Zoom Robert Scott Abandoned Photography: Safety, Ethics and Creative Composition Wednesday January 20, 2021 4:00 PM Pacific Standard Time Free to CAPA Individual Members The Zoom invitation is posted in the Members area of the website. You must be logged into your CAPA account to access the invitation.... Robert Scott is an Alberta based photographer specializing in landscape, commercial and instructional workshops. As a boy growing up on the prairies of Manitoba in the 1980’s, my friends and I would jump onto our BMX bikes and head out exploring until the orange street lights began to hum. Many of these adventures found us standing nervously at the foot of the local haunted house. In 2006 I traded in my BMX for a big boy motorcycle. During a prairie storm along a secondary highway, I was forced to pull over and seek shelter in a near by abandoned building. Lucky for me I had my small point & shoot camera attached to my hip. While waiting out the storm, I explored the building and snapped a few pictures all the while unpacking that dusty box of childhood memories. This experience reignited his passion for exploring abandoned houses while growing up a prairie boy in Brandon, Manitoba. He has now turned his passion for abandonment into a new venture called ‘Abandoned Photo Tours’. Clients are taken to the most picturesque abandoned homesteads on the prairies, with permission from the landowners where he instructs creative composition and night photography. While working daily on photography projects, Robert is also Taekwon-do instructor and Canadian coach who has been teaching in Calgary since 1993 When not taking pictures and kicking, Robert enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 year old son, William. www.robertscott.ca

In recognition of her high standard of photographic achievement and service to CAPA, the CAPA Honours Committee has awarded Janet Slater with the distinction of Fellowship in the Canadian Association for Photographic Art FCAPA. This is a high honour. It is because of committed and dedicated people like Janet Slater, who share their energy and expertise with others, that CAPA can continue our services to photographers, and also to see growth in the understanding of photogra...phic art among the general public. Janet is an avid photographer, working to improve and challenge herself, capturing colour and composition, to reflect both beauty and emotion. Her photographic journey began 7 years ago. With no background in photography but a lifetime of interest in creating beauty through her numerous crafts, Janet took courses to learn the technical aspects of photography so that she could properly focus her artistic intentions. She joined the Langley Camera Club in 2014 and joined the Sunshine Coast Camera Club in 2018 . Janet Slater is the CAPA District Representative for the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. Congratulations Janet Slater! https://capacanada.ca/janet-slater-awarded-fcapa/

Only in Canada...the Prince George Photographic Society held a properly distanced outdoor gathering on Saturday November 7 in the fairground parking lot to give out awards to the club members who participated in the CAPA Pacific Zone Challenge. Members brought chairs to form a circle and wore masks. There was bright sun and a stiff wind with freezing temperatures. Some parts of the city had snow overnight but the fairground was clear. Photo provided by club president, Debbie Malm. Congratulations to all! Anyone want to guess the temperature?

Photographing something unusual or unknown is the perfect excuse to learn something new. Don’s work often pushes up against the technical limitations of modern camera equipment and the physical limitations of light itself.
