Today saw an increase of four positive cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia, bringing the total number of cases to 1,024. My thoughts are with the families of the t...hree individuals who lost their battles with this virus today. Here is your update: Health: There are three licensed long-term care facilities and unlicensed seniors' facilities that have active cases of COVID-19. o Northwood has 64 residents and 13 staff that make up these cases. o One onother facility has one staff member with an active case and another facility has one resident with an active case. Health Canada has authorized the first serological test. This test can detect antibodies specific to COVID-19 and will help us better understand immune responses to COVID-19. o The test is called the DiaSorin LIAISON, and was approved in the US in April 2020. The Premier stated that Nova Scotia has a supply of PPE for 90 days today. Financial: The Regional Relief and Recovery Fund for supporting industries (including tourism and seasonal) was established. o Funding will go through six development agencies by region. Nova Scotia’s funding will go through the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency. o $675 million to support regional economies, businesses, organizations and communities in regions all across Canada; o $287 million to support the national network of Community Futures Development Corporations, which will specifically target small businesses and rural communities across the country. If industries do not have access to supports, the federal government recommends reaching out to their economic development agency. A full list can be found here: https://www.ic.gc.ca//w/eic/site/icgc.nsf/eng/h_07662.html. Applications for the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) will open this Friday, May 15, 2020. It is recommended that students set up a CRA account in advance. Details on eligibility can be found here: https://www.canada.ca//emergency-stude/cesb-who-apply.html. Operational: Dr. Strang stated yesterday that households will be contacted by their respective Regional Centres for Education soon regarding how to make an appointment to retrieve materials left in schools across Nova Scotia. The federal government announced a new temporary policy that will drastically reduce the time it takes for a temporary foreign worker to start a new job. o Those who are already in Canada and have secured a new job can get approval to start working in their new job, even while their work permit application is being fully processed. This will cut what can often take more than ten weeks down to ten days or fewer. Uber will require drivers, couriers and passengers to wear masks starting next Monday, May 18, 2020.

On Friday May 1st, please light 3 candles in memory of Aaron Tuck, Jolene Oliver and Emily Tuck as they get cremated. They lost their lives in a senseless and b...rutal mass killing spree that took 23 lives (news reports 22,, but one victim was pregnant) April 18th and April 19th in NS Canada. A moment of silence is also appreciated. Thank you from all family and friends.

Age-friendly communities grant The Age-friendly Community Grant Program provides funding up to $25,000 for projects that lead to more age-friendly communities. ...Projects funded through the program help advance the goals outlined in Shift: Nova Scotia’s Action Plan for an Aging Population. Projects must fall into one of two broad categories: Age-friendly community planning: Consultation and community planning initiatives that result in robust action plans and age-friendly communities. These planning initiatives must be in partnership with local government and include consultation with and engagement of older adults, the broader community, and key stakeholders. Community projects: Innovative projects (could be collaborative) to develop and/or implement programs, services, resources or events that support active, healthy living; help older adults stay connected to community life; maximize the economic and social contributions of older adults; and increase social interaction and community involvement among older adults.
