Unfortunately, we are in the 'tick zone', and it looks like they are here to stay. You don't have to give up on our great outdoors, though, you just have to take a few precautions.
Anuj and Jyotsna Jain had their breakfast beside the lighthouse last week. Thanks for sharing your wonderful photo!
If you are hiking on the Cape George Trails - or anywhere else in our beautiful province - this might be good to know!
This is a great resource! You can search any part of the province for many different types of activity areas, and you can translate the results into any language - right on the page!
While you are enjoying the beauty of the area, remember to keep yourself safe!

The hiking trails are lovely, but remember you are never alone!
You probably already know that walking briskly may have positive health benefits. A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found an assoc...iation between the pace of walking and lowering the risk of premature death. And the benefits seemed more pronounced in older age groups. So it seems your excuse for not taking a brisk walk just got flimsier. It turns out, just one hour of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week (10 minutes/day) such as Nordic Pole Walking can help you remain disability-free, especially if you suffer from knee osteoarthritis. Given that some 14 million older adults deal with the pain and limitations from this disabling arthritis, an easy exercise routine of a daily brief and brisk walk should be of great benefit to millions of people. To best accomplish brisk walking use the Nordic Walking method of using Nordic poles with proper technique while you walk. The www.NordicWalkingNovaScotia.ca website can give you guidance about equipment, beginner classes, walking groups and the best techniques to use. Or, if you’d like a visual demonstration look at the videos on that site. See more
It's interesting to know what Mother Nature is up to while we go about our daily lives!
Studies tell us that fresh air and exercise are the best medicine for many ailments, but they are not always enough. This video is only 30 seconds long, and Bell will donate 5 cents to mental health initiatives for every view today. Please watch it (again), share it with EVERYONE, and let's talk!
Thanks to Halifax Adventure for this companion piece to yesterday's "tracks" post!
Here's a handy guide to keep in your pocket while you're walking the trails!
Today might not have been a perfect day for a walk in the woods, but we hope 2019 leads you down some interesting trails!

A lovely shot of the lighthouse by Carolin Schluter!
Our final guided hike will take place tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 8 August) at 9AM - a 2 hour trip to the beautiful Bubbling Springs. Remember to bring some water to help with the heat and humidity! Enjoy the day.
The joy of hiking isn't always about going higher, further, longer or deeper. Sometimes it's about slowing down and enjoying every step in its exquisitely beautiful, unique and molecular detail, finds Leon McCarron.
It's a beautiful morning for a hike! Our guided parent-child hike is on this morning starting at 10AM. An easy hike to the beach will leave you with time to have a snack and enjoy nature. Hope to see you there!

The Hike-A-Thon is still on with the weather clearing up and the sun is coming out! We are here till 1PM today, come out and enjoy a hike or eat some homemade chilli
We wanted to ease everyone's fears before the annual Hike-A-Thon and say that the ticks are not an issue at this point in the summer! Additionally the trails are very well maintained during the months of July and August, thanks to summer students. The grass is kept short and the branches are cut back so there shouldn't be risk of exposure to ticks. Of course precautions should be taken such as bug spray and long pants with socks. We wanted to make sure no one would be deterred from coming out to the Hike-A-Thon Saturday! We hope for a great turn out SPREAD THE WORD
