Hearing Loss: Use it or Lose it? Hearing loss is often gradual, which can make it easy to adapt to but also difficult to detect. Something we see fairly often in our clinic is Auditory Deprivation. This is a condition that occurs in those with hearing loss, where the brain loses the ability to interpret words and speech signals due to lack of stimulation over a period of time. When those with hearing loss choose not to treat the loss with hearing aids, we can see a decrease ...in speech recognition abilities. This is because the hearing nerve has not been receiving adequate stimulation, which causes it to become deprived, less functional and weakened over time. Dont neglect your hearing. The sooner you treat your hearing loss, the better. Keep the hearing nerves stimulated and dont deprive them. How do I know when to change my hearing aid battery? Your hearing aid battery can last anywhere from three to ten days before it needs replacing, depending on which size of battery you have. The battery drain will also depend on usage and hearing aid style. You may hear two beeps when it is time to change your battery and it will give you a repeated warning at moderate intervals until the battery completely dies. ... You may also hear four beeps. This will be your last warning before your hearing aids turn off. When you go to replace your hearing aid battery, remove the sticker and let the battery sit for five minutes to fully activate before inserting it into the hearing aid. ** A used battery should be removed and disposed immediately. Store your hearing aids somewhere safe while you are not wearing them. We recommend putting them in your hearing aid case, and placing them out of reach of small children and pets. Also, remember to turn off the hearing aids once you remove them from your ears. Limit the Exposure to Cosmetics and Other Products Hearing aids can be damaged by chemicals that are found in some products that we use on a daily basis. Products such as hairspray, perfume, make-up, and lotions have the potential of getting into your hearing aids and damaging the internal parts. Always remove your hearing aids before applying such products, and allow time for the product to dry. Then, just remember to wash your hands and make sure they are clean before handling your hearing aids again.

We hope you are enjoying your summer thus far! Here are a few tips for keeping your hearing aids safe in the sun. - Remove your hearing aids before applying sunscreen. Your sunscreen may block or damage the microphone ports, and may contain chemicals that can be damaging to the plastic of the hearing aid. - Check for moisture in the battery door and dry them out when necessary. We tend to sweat more in the summer, which can lead to more condensation in the hearing aids.... - Keep your hearing aids out of direct sunlight and avoid leaving them in extreme heat, when you are not wearing them. Extreme temperatures may damage the body of the hearing aid by melting the plastic components. - Avoid touching the hearing aids if you have either sand or sunscreen on your hands.

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the leading causes of hearing loss, so we have gathered some helpful tips on how you can protect your hearing: 1. Wear proper hearing protection. ... Earplugs are an easy and affordable option. Dont worry, youll still be able to hear the music. 2. Avoid standing next to the speakers, and stand towards the back if you can. Standing close to the sound source may seem great at the time, but it can leave your ears ringing and can have implications on your hearing. 3. Take breaks! Enjoying two solid hours of loud music sounds like fun, but your ears need a break once in a while. If there is a lull in the music, step away for five minutes and let your ears adjust to normal noise levels before returning. 4. Monitor noise levels by using an app on your phone. Apps like Decibel Sound Meter Pro or Decibel Meter will allow you to check the loudness levels at the concert. If the level is over 90dB, we would suggest moving to a quieter spot. Dont stress about wearing your hearing aids in the rain! Most hearing aids meet an IP rating of 68, which means they can survive being submerged under water for up to 30 minutes. If you are concerned about remaining moisture in the hearing aid, open up the battery door to let it ventilate or ask your Audiologist about a hearing aid Dri-Aid kit.
