please read this informative letter from The Our Town Our City Institue and please share. VETP A Health and Economics Hazard A Valley East Twin Pad arena, pro...posed for the Howard Armstrong site in Valley East, presents major hazards to health, environment and economics. The public was not informed of these hazards in the recent public input survey making the survey invalid. Drinking water source for the former towns of Rayside-Balfour, Valley East and Capreol, already stressed, will see increased risk for both supply and quality. The VETP will further stress the water system without knowledge of the stress limits. CGS recently approved $17 million towards minimizing consumption and determining the stress limits. Contamination already exceeds Health Unit recommendations and limits capacity. Are taxpayers in these urban areas and CGS aware of this and think the risk to their water supply is worth the benefit? Unavoidable environmental consequences to satisfy desire for a new arena is proposed. Greenhouse gas emissions during construction will exceed 90,000 tonnes. That would double (450 ppm to 900 ppm) the atmospheric Carbon Dioxide in a volume of air in more than 100,000 enclosed Rogers Centres. Carbon sequestering green space will be destroyed. Are Sudburians aware of this hazard and in order to eliminate one ice pad? Pre-conceptual construction estimates have risen from $22 million to $26 million and is now $36 million which, with interest, will cost taxpayers about $57 million not including equipment and furnishings. Capital and operating costs for the VETP over a ten-year period will be more than double that of existing arenas. Economics local to existing arenas will be damaged. Benchmarking of the CGS arenas against other urban centres, across Ontario, indicates that Sudbury has fewer than the average when comparing equal size urban centres. Economies of scale to save operating money have never been accomplished in administrative organizations, demonstrated by the amalgamation of the City of Greater Sudbury. Stakeholder Input has only included CGS Staff and ignored input of the stakeholders who will be paying for the facility and facing the hazards. Taxpayers should be aware of; these hazards, decisions being made on their behalf and continuing tax dollars spending on the project. OTOC Institute

We should all be concerned on what is being proposed and will surely increase taxes and destroy valuable property. please read and share Subject: Save our Herit...age and Tax Payers The City wants to build a new arena, library and art gallery to replace existing facilities at a combined cost, including interest on debt, of hundreds of millions of dollars. The present buildings have a monetary, cultural and functional value that needs to be considered. image.png The central library main branch on McKenzie St. Is next to the Red Oak Villa Residence for Seniors and across from Sudbury Secondary School. It is just a short walk to the Rainbow Centre and Elm, Durham and Elgin Streets. The modern in appearance air conditioned two storey building has an elevator and meeting rooms. It also has free parking on site. Informal surveys have shown that citizens are very satisfied with the facility and see no need for a new building as suggested on Shaughnessy Street where it would likely be less convenient. The present building is well located, in good condition and should be preserved. The future of libraries in the digital age is uncertain and building new is problematic. image.png Described by the city as the heart of the downtown the Sudbury Community Arena, home of the Sudbury Wolves and Sudbury Five basketball team has had a long history as an entertainment venue. The building is the same age as the arena in North Bay that was successfully modernized for a fraction of the cost of a new building. Our arena contributes to the economic vitality of the downtown. Estimates of renovating this historical landmark including dressing and wash rooms and improved acoustics etc. have put the cost at far less than a new structure. image.png The Bell Rock Mansion current home of the Art Gallery is an historical site that deserves to be preserved. It has parking on site and room to create more. Besides showcasing Art the facility could have a museum component depicting our interesting past in photos and displays. Renovations are recommended such as installation of an elevator and washroom improvements etc. however, this could be accomplished at much less cost than a new structure. Attendance at Art galleries has declined across the county but museums continue to attract visitors who want to learn more of local history. Note: Of particular consideration is the value of these buildings and their disposition. Money will have to be borrowed for all projects creating long term debt at a time when we know provincial funding will be reduced and most citizens want the repair and maintenance of crumbling infrastructure plus consideration of climate change including protection of our valued water resources. Let's preserve what is of value, renovate as necessary at less cost than new. Is this not both sensible and practical and contribute to the historical significance of our city.
