As we say goodbye to 2020 we understand your desire to celebrate the end of the most difficult year in recent memory but we ask the you consider our 4 legged friends. Many pets get very frightened with fireworks. If you decide to set them off, advise your neighbours who have pets and follow all safety precautions. Below are some helpful tips for you to consider for your own pets. Celebrate safely and Happy New Year!!!

The Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA) is proud to announce that Fire Chief Duane S. Antle of Come By Chance Newfoundland is the recipient of ...the 2020 CVFSA Lifetime Achievement Award. Chief Antle was selected by a committee of four volunteers from across Canada who reviewed all nominations. Duane Antle joined the Victoria Newfoundland Fire Department in 1994 where he served as a training officer, lieutenant, captain and assistant chief until 2001. He has also served as a training officer and rescue officer in the Southwest Arm Fire Department. He joined the Come By Chance Fire Department in 2004 where he served as training officer and assistant chief. In 2009 he was appointed Fire Chief, a position he holds today. Chief Antle was instrumental in initiating a CISM peer support group for departments in Come By Chance and neighbouring communities. As an active member of the CISM team he often responds personally to debriefing and defusing sessions. His dedication to his community is demonstrated by his goal to improve fire service while sitting on local committees and with an initiative to ensure all homes in his region were equipped with two working smoke detectors at no charge. He has also organized specialty training in Autism Awareness throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. To date over 3500 first responders have taken part. He was elected President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services in 2015 after his participation in the Association for many years. On behalf of Council, staff and myself, I want to congratulate Fire Chief Duane Antle on being recognized for such a prestigious award. It is well deserved, and our town and Province are lucky to have him on our side. Duane goes above and beyond anytime he is needed. Keep up the great work, Chief!, says Come By Chance, Mayor Chad Giles. The 2020 CVFSA Lifetime Achievement Award program is supported by Duracell. *Due to COVID 19 restrictions the announcement this year will be made virtually.

Have a Safe and Merry Christmas.

Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department 11.10.2020

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish one and all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe Holiday Season. This has been a different and challenging year to say the least. Let’s end it on a safe and joyous note. As we spend the next days with friends and family please keep everyone’s best interests in mind by drinking responsibly and certainly not drinking and driving. It’s just not worth it.... Of course, keep fire safety in mind this holiday season by keeping your real trees watered and away from heat sources. Also, please don’t overload your receptacles with extra lights, decorations, etc. Above all, be thankful for what you have and take the time to enjoy those around you. Given the uncertainty of this past year, we can appreciate time with friends and family more than ever. Please celebrate safely and responsibly. We will come out of this year and into a new one with the hope, aspirations and optimism we put forth each new year. With that said, please enjoy the remainder of 2020. On behalf of the Executive Committee and Members of the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department, we wish you and yours all the best this holiday season. Merry Christmas!!! CVFD Executive Committee and Members.

The following is a message from the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services President, Fire Chief Joe Power. About this year’s Fire Prevention W...eek. "With people staying at home more these days, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is more relevant than ever with Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen! According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), almost half of reported fires started in the kitchen and two-third of home cooking fire start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. Which is why our Association and Fire departments throughout our Province will use the week of October 4-10 to educate our communities on cooking hazards, the dangers of unattended cooking, and precautions they can take to prevent cooking-related fires. A cooking fire can occur just as easily as it can be prevented. Getting people to recognize that there is still a home fire risk has been challenging. Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen works to remind the public that fires can and do still happen. It educates the public about the dangers posed by cooking and the simple but effective actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen. Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. You must be alert when cooking. You will not be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or consumed alcohol that makes you drowsy. Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you are cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool. Have a kid-free zone of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. A cooking fire can occur just as easily as it can be prevented. Simple actions like setting a timer, keeping your cooking areas clear, and staying focused on the food makes a compounding difference to keep you and those around you safe. No doubt these are challenging times with no easy answers, but our work to help advocate for and implement fire and life safety in our communities is even more crucial than ever before. Less fires means less burden on our first responders. The work we do for Fire Prevention Week is important to the security and well-being of communities everywhere. Therefore, it is incumbent on all of us to recognize and take full advantage of the campaign not just in October, but all year long. With the Covid19 pandemic ongoing we will have to develop new ways of spreading our messages, so together by sharing campaign-related resources and information we can help inspire individuals and families to become their own advocates and embrace their personal role in our safety system. I encourage all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to educate themselves on the steps they can take to protect themselves and their families. Fires caused by cooking and heating can be devastating but ensuring smoke alarms are in working order and home fire escape plans are in place could mean the difference between life and death. As the rest of our nation and the world reel with the COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of first responders are a huge focus not only for the first responders and their families but also for the community in which they serve; so we are asking all residents of our Province to please follow all the guidelines and recommendations that are set forward by our Chief Medical Officer of Health. Fire Chief Joe Power President, Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services"
