Stress and Heart Disease There have been many recent studies released that talk about the correlation between stress and heart disease. There is no doubt that stress has multiple effects on our health. Stress has a huge effect on our mental health, our digestive health and yes, our heart health. We have discussed stress and heart health before and we recognize the importance of speaking about it to help everyone identify when stress is effecting their lives. How does stress... effect our heart health? Whether it’s emotional stress, work stress, or financial stress our heart carries a huge part of the burden. Stress is known to cause an inflammatory response in the body. This response can result in high blood pressure, high heart rates and palpitations just to make a few. In severe cases the inflammatory response can set the stage for atherosclerosis - plaque build up in the arteries. This plaque prevents blood flow resulting in ischemia (angina) and as plaque increases heart attacks become imminent. How do we prevent the effects of stress on our heart health? First you need to identify the cause of your stress. Second, develop a plan to deal with or remove the stress. Third, we need to realize that every person deals with stress differently and we need to acknowledge those differences. How do you know your heart is being effected by stress? The initial symptoms may seem small. Maybe your heart rate is up a little or you’ve noticed your blood pressure creeping up. But as time passes your blood pressure seems to be staying higher than normal. You’re feeling more fatigued and short of breath when you exert yourself. Or maybe you feel an unusual fluttering in your heart. These are all symptoms that you should have investigated by a physician. Allow a physician to determine the source of the symptoms and help you develop a plan to correct them. Ignoring symptoms, such as increased blood pressure, could result in more underlying issues. Remember, the early you deal with your symptoms the more options you have to correct them. The answer could be as simple as lifestyle changes such as dietary changes or increasing exercise, and in more pressing cases you may need to introduce medications. Either way, the goal is to improve your health. Reducing stress in our lives is key to improving many aspects of our health. Try to leave some time each day to de-stress. Reading a book, going for a walk, taking to family or friends, playing a sport, yoga or meditation. All are great options to help you de-stress. Maybe today it’s 30 minutes and tomorrow it’s 5 minutes. Take the time you need to reset. If you think you are experiencing stress and you are having a hard time dealing with it please contact your physician.
