Departing Vancouver International after clearing customs next stop Pitt Meadows then Kelowna. New border crossing rules for COVID mean that we have to clear at one of the big 4 airports. It does add some expense and miles but it also makes for some neat views especially when the China Southern Airlines Boeing 787 is holding short for the wee RV10 departure. ATC kept calling me a Cirrus but I didn’t have the heart to correct them. Same same different. WARNING GRATITUDE + POLITICS . We wanted to give a huge shout out to the Canada Border Services Agency! As part of our work we have been working closely with the officers at several crossings and airports of entry. Every single officer from the CANPASS call centre in Hamilton to the officers in Calgary, Abbotsford and Vancouver have been nothing short of clear, patient and reasonable during these very unpredictable times. They have always been willing to answer questions and ...discuss the changing rules with a lot of common sense. We thank them for their professionalism and service despite being constantly given unclear and ambiguous information from the federal government. . Our gratitude to CBSA is in stark contrast to my feelings toward the Canadian Federal Government (Excluding TC Inspectors) who have failed the Aviation sector at every step of this pandemic. They are systematically dismantling what is the backbone of commerce and trade on this country and destroying livelihoods and causing damage to the aerospace sector that will take years to repair of it ever can. . At Cardinal Aviation we continue to work within the ever changing goalposts set by the Federal Government and do take our duty seriously to do our jobs using strict COVID precautions while trying to assist our clients in conducting cross border trade. Story from the road, literally! It’s really interesting how two very different yet similar worlds can collide. Today I walked across the the Canada / US border to pick up an aircraft in Bellingham to bring it back to Canada. While walking down the road I caught up with Gerald. He also walked across the border with a bag in tow. We got talking as we walked the almost 2 miles to where we could get a taxi to share to Bellingham Airport. . Why does any of this matter? Well I’m cr...ossing the border to ferry an RV (Winged) and Gerald was crossing the border to come home after ferrying an RV (The Wheeled Glamping Kind) from Indiana to Kamloops BC. Gerald was really interesting. He won’t fly commercial and takes the train all over the country to pick up his deliveries. He is a veteran and carried around a bag with 10,000 sports trading cards that he sells on EBay while he is on the road. Turns out ferrying wheeled or winged RVs has many of the same challenges. . Today’s mission is an acceptance test flight on this Experimental C182. It has a C182 Fuselage, C206 Wings and a C185 Engine! It just finished getting a new paint job, autopilot and brand new all Garmin panel! This afternoon I had the opportunity to take @bardia92s for a flight in our beautiful British Columbian backyard. Bardia is visiting from the Prairies to take part in this weekend’s survival shakedown course which will put pilots to the test having to spend a night in the woods with nothing but their aircraft survival kit. I took Bardia flying to show him how real survival planning is in this part of the country even if you are only going on a 20 minute flight. The COVID crisis has made it difficult for US buyers to come to Canada to pickup their newly purchased airplanes. Today we had the great honour of ferrying this beautiful Bellanca Decathalon accross the border so that it’s new owners could pick it up.
