**** Please share this info with friends or family members who are pregnant, or are planning to start a family. An informed patient is the path to optimal oral health! In conversations with our patients, we encounter quite a few misconceptions about oral health during pregnancy. A common one is: Poor oral health is a normal part of pregnancy. ... False. In fact, neglecting your teeth can put your baby at risk. Letting your oral health deteriorate during pregnancy can lead to poor pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and low birth weights. Studies have shown that preterm babies have a higher incidence of developmental complications, asthma, ear infections, birth abnormalities, and behavioral difficulties. There is an old saying that a mother loses a tooth for every child. We now know that baby teeth form in utero from nutrients in a mother's diet, not from her teeth. So why is a woman's oral health challenged during pregnancy? 50% of women will experience gingivitis starting at the end of the first trimester due to an increase in estrogen and progesterone levels. 50% of women experience morning sickness, which in turn can contribute to nutritional deficiencies and teeth can erode quickly from vomiting. So ... what can we do to manage the increased oral risk factors associated with pregnancy? It's simple: We make sure we match the changes in the oral environment with the appropriate care. Here are some helpful guidelines from Health Canada, who suggest you visit a dentist/hygienist in the first trimester to help manage the changes to your oral health. http://healthycanadians.gc.ca///oral-buccodentaire-eng.php Dr. Scott Loraas, DDS Care Dental, Camrose 780-672-9211
