Is your procrastination actually programming by the patriarchy? I was recently chatting with a friend who’s starting an AMAZING business and was beating herself up for procrastinating. She was saying, I do everything for everyone else QUICKLY but can’t do it for myself. Maybe I’m just not MOTIVATED ENOUGH.... I said, I don’t think that’s it. Women have been told to SIT DOWN, SHUT UP and TAKE CARE OF EVERYONE ELSE’S needs for CENTURIES. We’ve ALSO been told: work super hard taking care of everyone else needs and DON’T YOU DARE ask for payment. Don’t be SELFISH! It might feel like you’re unmotivated but it might actually be because you’re trying to swim up a WATERFALL. ASK: What from patriarchy and/or white supremacy and/or ableism and/or classism and/or homophobia and/or transphobia and/or other forms of oppression could be making this difficult? YOU’RE NOT BROKEN. THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. But there is a CURRENT THAT’S FLOWING AGAINST YOU. The more you bring awareness to the TRUTH about why you don’t feel motivated today, the more you can see that you are STRONG and GOOD and MOTIVATED ENOUGH and begin to heal from the systemic oppression you’ve experienced. Trying to get rid of the inner critic completely is painful because it doesn’t ever completely go away. That’s because your brain is a 40,000 year old piece of technology and the looking for danger function started in cave people times to keep people safe from lions and poison berries. So when your brain says, You suck! Who do you think you are?! You’re greedy! ... You can say, I have a human brain that comes with an inner critic already installed. Nothing has gone wrong here. And if that doesn’t ease the emotional pain, you likely need to do what Emily and Amelia Nagoski call completing the stress cycle. To naturally complete a stress cycle you can: - move your body (from walking to yoga to exercise) - have a positive social interaction (from complimenting your baristas earrings to texting a bestie) - 20 second hug (hugging until your body softens) - deeper breathing - creativity (art, dance, acting, creative writing etc) All of the above work and you get to experiment to figure out what works best for you . This fall my grandpa called me and offered to give me their Toyota Yaris. Initially I said that I’d think about it. I didn’t have a car and wasn’t sure I wanted one. I didn’t know if I wanted to take on the costs of insurance and gas. I live in a house with a driveway and the Yaris is small, so perfect for city driving, but I wasn’t sure. ... I think it’s because I haven’t always been good at receiving. I’d brush off compliments and try to do things on my own. But slowly and surely I’ve been trying to shift that. To let others help me, to receive gifts with grace, to allow myself to be taken care of. So I decided to say yes. I stretched my receiving muscle so the muscle could grow. So that I can let more of what I want into my life. And it shifted something energetically. I received beautiful gifts over the holidays that were initially hard to take in but I practiced relaxing into it. I practiced feeling grateful. If receiving is hard for you and you want more money or love or care in your life, this is changeable. Like any shift, you can take baby steps, practice saying thank you when someone gives you a compliment. Or saying yes when a friend offers to pick up some groceries for you. Step by step you’ll grow that muscle. And step by step you’ll be able to welcome in more money, love and care into your life. P.S. One of my favourite ways to punish myself is to set an impossible goal and then berate myself when I don’t achieve it. Or other times, I’d reach a goal and immediately double it, spending no time feeling accomplished or proud of myself. It’s the same way I used to be attracted to people who weren’t interested in me or who were a little bit mean.... If someone was kind hearted and genuinely interested, I’d find them BORING and chase after someone less available. What if you could develop a sacred relationship with goal setting? My mental health is the best it’s ever been, despite the pandemic and the lockdown and the February-ness we’re in right now. A big part of it is because I’ve been working with the same amazing mental health professional for over 3 years. You might be finding you set boundaries with friends, and it’s absolutely no problem. But then you do the exact same thing with a family member and it doesn’t work!! When this happens, you’ll need to do what I call Leak-Proofing your boundaries. Here’s an example:... REGULAR BOUNDARY You say, Mom, I don’t want you to comment about how much food I eat. But then your mom comments anyways, just like she always does and you don’t know what to do. Try a LEAK PROOF BOUNDARY: You say, If you comment on how much food I’m eating this week, I’m not going to come to Sunday dinner next week. And then of course, if your mom comments, you have to follow through on your consequence. YOU CAN’T CONTROL YOUR FAMILY (which I totally wish sometimes I could control my family!). But you can 100% control how you react to them. It was SOO fun to run the Boundaries Training Camp last week! The #1 place folks needed help setting boundaries was with their family. But I was surprised by the number #2 people needed help setting boundaries: it was with their inner critic! Now boundary setting with your Inner Critic in some ways, is the exact opposite of setting boundaries with family or friends. Because the inner critic is IN YOUR HEAD, you need a completely different strategy.... Let’s start by defining the inner critic. INNER CRITIC: the mean voice in your head BUT ALSO a part of you that’s scared and is trying to protect you in a messed up way. So getting into battle with your inner critic doesn’t work. But there is a way to set boundaries with your inner critic, it’s just not what you think. Okay here are the steps: 1) Write down ALL the things your inner critic is saying. Write them or record them all in a voice note. 2) Ask yourself, out of everything my inner critic is saying: What’s most believable to me? 3) Write this down: It’s safe that I [most believable thought]. It’s safe that I made a mistake at work. It’s safe that I might have moved to the wrong city. It’s safe that I might have been too harsh to my friend. You’re still alive. Your friend is still alive. And call on a deeper wiser part of you to protect that scared part.... You’re meant to take care of yourself, you’re meant to go for your dreams and it’s okay if they get mad at you for it. In the cave people times, if you got kicked out of the group, you would likely die trying to survive on your own. And our brains haven’t evolved from that time period. So our brains are TERRIFIED of offending someone or not being liked by others. So maybe you want to share your art or start a podcast but are terrified to.... In cave people times, the people who survived were the ones who were always looking for danger, looking for the tiger lurking, looking for negativity. So the human brain is trained to always look for the negative. So your brain will tell you things like: you can’t do that. You can’t start a podcast, what will people think!? You can’t sell your art, what will people think!? You can’t make enough money running your own business, it’s not safe?! And if you had challenging experiences or trauma as a child, this only compounds your brain’s alarm system. But the good news is, your human brain is wrong. We live in a different world where for the most part there aren’t tigers lurking around every corner and where you won’t die if someone disagrees with you. You are capable of so much more than your brain wants you to believe. Want to start a stationery business? You can. Want to start a Youtube series? You can. Want to be an artist full time? You can. Want to travel around the world for a year? You can. Your brain will tell you all the reasons you can’t but your brain is a little bit outdated. You actually can do all of this. So what’s your crazy dream? What’s your impossible goal? You can do it. Warren Buffet’s net worth is $80 billion and he only spends $2-3 on breakfast at @McDonalds every morning. If he’s not feeling very prosperous, he goes for the $2 option of two sausage patties stacked on top of each other. This is an example of inner child saving. When a young part of you is scared of spending too much money, so you don’t invest in yourself or in what would bring more value to your life. Other examples could be not investing in a coach or a course that could ...really uplevel your business because you’re scared of the short term impact on your business but aren’t willing to look at the long term impact. If your finances aren’t where they want them to be it’s probably because inner child both SAVING and SPENDING are happening and you’re not allowing yourself to do ADULT saving and spending and investing. Sometimes those who are the most generous, have a hard time receiving both gifts and compliments. It’s important to grow your receiving muscle because you’re going to end up DRAINED and OVERWHELMED if you give and give but aren’t really able to receive. And you’re going be HAPPIER and FULLER OF ENERGY the more you learn to receive.... Here are some baby steps you can take: - When someone gives you a compliment, take a deep breath in and say thank you - If someone offers to pay for dinner or for your coffee, see if you can let them pay and say thank you - If you’re having sex with a partner, practice asking for what you want and receiving Practice building up your RECEIVING muscle so you can have more energy, pleasure, and joy in your life! #selfcaresunday

When I was driving home from Thanksgiving last weekend, we got stuck in some traffic. We looked on @GoogleMaps and it showed us that it was 10 minutes of traffic in RED and then we’d be back to the blue highway, with no more traffic for the rest of the trip. And it made me think, I wish I could use Google Maps for life! Maybe you’re trying to make money in your business and you feel like you’re in a TRAFFIC JAM, very slowly making money. But maybe the traffic jam is only goi...ng to last 10 minutes and then you’ll be back to the blue making money quickly. Or maybe you’re trying to reduce your anxiety and you feel like it’s going SLOW and you’re BARELY making progress, but in just 10 minutes or 10 days, you’ll have a huge breakthrough. Sometimes you feel like you’re stopped and you’re going to be stopped forever. But that’s not true. As long as you don’t give up, get off the highway and park the car, you’ll get through the traffic jams of life and soon you’ll be on the blue highway again, going fast!

If you’re someone who struggles with anxiety, sometimes what might be happening is that you're frustrated but you’re holding it in. Frustration or anger is the body’s natural reaction to when a boundary is crossed. But if you HOLD IT IN and don’t set a boundary because you’re scared of upsetting the other person this can cause anxiety.... So if you’re feeling anxious, check inside if there’s some sort of frustration or some sort of boundary you need to set. And to my fellow Canadians navigating Thanksgiving weekend during a pandemic, you might know this all too well! If you find some internal frustration - take a baby step towards setting a boundary. The step could be as small as talking to a friend about it and getting support. Or you could take a slightly bigger baby step and send a text to the person who you feel upset with. Take one small step. Now, if this resonates with you, and you want relief from this anxiety so you can have more energy and fun in your life, the fastest way is to heal this is work with an expert. I’m not an entrepreneur by choice. I never had a lemonade stand. Selling isn’t in my DNA. It doesn’t run in my family. When I started my business I knew NOTHING about entrepreneurship.
