From Fisheries & Oceans Canada We’re taking action on our commitment to protecting ’s wildlife and biodiversity and safeguarding the long-term health and productivity of Canada’s oceans and fisheries resources and the habitat that supports them. A $45,000 fine has been issued to a groundfish harvester in British Columbia for fishing in the Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound Glass Sponge Reefs Marine Protected Area. These important reefs were designated a Marine Protected Area under Canada’s Oceans Act in 2017 to protect unique and sensitive glass sponge reefs estimated to be over 9000 years old. They offer a rich and diverse marine ecosystem that provides habitat for multiple species. http://ow.ly/cyou50y8q27
