His journey from student to ambassador to team member makes him an unique addition and extremely passionate about what CAREERS does. Keep an eye out for him at local Edmonton businesses, hoping to find opportunities to give students the same chance he had. Welcome Ry!

This coming Sunday is an important day for the CAREERS family. June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day and is significant for Indigenous Canadians and Non-Indigenous Canadians alike. It is a day of recognition for the rich culture and immense contributions to society that First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples have made. It is vital that we continue to celebrate Canadas diversity and provide career exploration opportunities for all youth. Check out CAREERS Indigenous Y...outh Career Pathways Program to find out how you can get involved today. Make sure to keep an eye out for this summer's Indigenous student career coaches. Jonan Hatt (Central Alberta), Jack Bartlett (Northern Alberta) and Chevie-Lee Mitchell (Southern Alberta) will be working in communities across the province as mentors, providing youth with skills and knowledge to be successful in the work place. Stay tuned for some amazing success stories! While we may not be able to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day together, here are some ways you can celebrate virtually! https://www.ictinc.ca//11-ways-to-virtually-celebrate-nati

Thank you. Thanks to the community's efforts CAREERS donated nearly 3000 pounds of supplies and just over $4900 dollars to the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. To all those that came out to drop off food, including CAREERS board members, and to those who gave money, we truly appreciate the support shown for our province. After the donation was made, a few team CAREERS team members spent the afternoon sorting through and making food hampers with all the donations from our community!

It is #EducationWeek which is all the more reason to give a huge shout out to Alberta families, students and especially teachers and educational partners who have quickly adapted to ensure that even though it's at a distance, students are still learning. Thank you.
Say hello to Stephanie Jones(green jacket)! She is our Calgary Fund Development Manager and more recently has become our from home fitness motivator! How you are keeping busy? By getting up at my normal time every day (5:15am!) to do a workout with some gym friends on Zoom at 6am. This keeps me accountable to a consistent schedule, wakes my brain and body up for a day of isolated computer work, and gives me some much-needed social interaction so I always start the day in a go...od mood! Why be a CAREERS Teammate? I have worked in the not-for-profit sector for most of my professional career, always having been drawn to the great people, fun environment, and feel-good reward of doing something that helps to make the world a better place. At CAREERS, I work with our industry partners and donors to help them bring young local talent into their workforces, contribute to their communities, and play leadership roles in their respective industries. Fun Fact: In the span of three weeks I went from having zero at-home gym equipment to getting rid of my kitchen table and couch, laying down rubber flooring, and turning my kitchen/living room into a functional gym, complete with a pull-up bar and spin bike! #priorities Or anything else you would like to add! It`s a good thing I`ve invested in a home-gym and regular workout schedule, as I`ve also picked up the practice of (sourdough) bread-making, and after a week of making pizza dough, cookies, pancakes, artisan loaves, and dinner rolls, my bread intake has increased by roughly 1000%.
Check out some touching stories that Program Coordinator, Ernie Grach, has experienced over his years at CAREERS. He shared some of the sights he has seen while working from home. While we might not have a picture of him, he is nearly dead centre in our team picture from last year! "I have already sent out an email to my schools and our NW team meeting I will be discussing some strategies with my fellow teammates. SoI am working on two and possibly three student placements.... This COVID thing is somewhat of a barrier. As far as staying healthy is concerned, I have been riding my bike indoors practicing for the ride to conquer cancer. Unfortunately, it has been postponed till the summer of 2021. I keep practicing though! I take my dogs for a quad ride every day They run for about an hour, chase deer, varmints and ravens. Its funny to see the latter. The ravens seem to know when the dogs are coming and literally dive bomb them. Then they fly away at about waist height just out of the dogs reach. Its quite comical to see. I feed birds and watching them is like watching a ballet. They peck at the seeds until our neighbourhood squirrel chases them away. Then the magpies fly at the squirrel until the ravens comeand so it goes. All while a large chicken sits under the feeders, oblivious, and chows down. The chickadees have become so tame, if I stand still with seeds in my hand, they land on my fingers and eat the seeds. The favourite part of my job is working with the schools and presenting to the kids. But I also enjoy working with employers quite a bit. I love working with Indigenous kids the most. One of my employers has a shop foreman who was a RAP kid, his Heavy Equipment Technician, now a Red Seal Mechanic also came up through RAP and this year, they hired another RAP student as an apprentice HET. All Indigenous First Nation students and all from Mistassiniy School. Other note in a similar line, Eagle Willier was a forestry intern at Buchanan Lumber in High Prairie. When I tried to place her, I was summoned to her home by her father. He interrogated me for about two hours just making sure nothing untoward was going to happen to his daughter. His wife had died years earlier and he was the single father of six kids all girls. She went on to University and got a degree in Environmental Science, worked for ATCO for some time, then the University of Alberta as a Native Liaison and now she is in charge of youth initiatives for TSAG and specializes in Source Water Presentations, amongst other things. I met her again in September at a career fair held in Wabasca. She had never seen the completed version of the Indigenous video so I played it for her. We had a good laugh. She stated emphatically that her internship through CAREERS made a huge difference in her life."
What a friendly face! Dale is also one of our newer teammates and we are so happy to have him! Here is a little about him: Hello!... My name is Dale Tiedemann and I am the new CAREERS Program Coordinator for the Grande Prairie and Area. I joined CAREERS in January of this year and have been working to engage with students, employers and schools throughout the Northwest. In my past work life, Ive been fortunate to explore opportunities over a wide range of career pathways, including: media, government, non-profit, community/youth engagement and the public sector. One of my strengths and passions is building relationships and linking people with opportunities to work together. I am thrilled to be a part of the CAREERS Team and serve communities throughout the Peace Region! #CAREERSconnects
Our Calgary Team Lead, Dan Olesen, has been keeping very busy! He and his kids built this amazing igloo box fort! Now, the kids were SUPER excited to brave a whole night inside of it...How did they prepare? Check out Dan's interview with them pre-campout! #stayhome #CAREERSconnects "One of the best parts of my job, is sharing the great advice Ive learned from our employer partners combined with few of the life lessons of my own. I was once told that there are two ways of ...learning life lessons. One is the hard way and the second is the harder way. At times, life is hard and I readily admit that most of my life lessons I had to learn the harder way. When I try and do things, I am often experimenting along the way. It means I make mistakes. It is a good thing because trial and error is a great way to learn. I hope that the energy, conviction, and my real examples I add to CAREERS messaging resonate with the students participating. This weekend, we built a dome fort with cardboard triangles, glue, and duct tape -complete with lights. It took two days (mostly because we measured one triangle wrong). It was hard project to begin with and it was harder than it had to be, because we didnt measure twice, cut once. We learned a lot about box fort building. We are looking forward to the next (even bigger) fort. Too bad these hours will not count towards our apprenticeship. " -Dan Olesen See more
