Listen to this CBC interview with Gabriel, a migrant farm worker who spoke out about COVID conditions at multi-millionaire Scotlynn Farms, and won $24,000 when he took his boss to the Labour Board! Migrant workers are rising up for #StatusForAll! "Gabriel Flores Flores, a migrant worker who lost his job after speaking out about COVID conditions at an Ontario farm, says he took the risk because if he didn't say anything, nothing would change - not just for him but for all the migrant workers who spend months away from families back home to work in difficult precarious conditions in Canada."

READ & SHARE: Imagine not being able to hug your own family or children for YEARS! Stella Ita, a migrant Care Worker from Cameroon, shares her experience of moving to Canada, working as a nanny, being separated from her family, losing her job, becoming homeless, trying to find a new job, experiencing racism, facing difficulties applying for permanent status, and finally being reunited with her children after receiving enormous support from her community. Care Workers S...HOULD NOT be forced to go through years of family separation before we can be reunited with our own families in Canada. READ & SHARE: Caregivers caught in a ‘Crisis Within A Crisis’! Our report shows that 48 per cent of respondents reported working longer hours, ranging from 10 to 12 hours a day. One in three respondents who lost their jobs during COVID-19 are struggling to find a new employer to sponsor them in order to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and the 24 months (required for permanent residency), said Da Silva, Organizer with Caregivers' Action Centre. Care wor...kers who have become undocumented due to long delays in the renewal of their work permit continue to work long hours without getting fully paid, said Marlyn Lopez, Former Migrant Care Worker from Cceso Cceso. Caregivers who are awaiting results of their PR applications are in a state of limbo, or so-called in implied status. While allowed to stay in the country pending results of their application, migrant care workers on implied status are unable to renew health coverage. - Judy Cabato, Care Worker Member with CDWCR. COVID-19 has created a cascade of crises, shattering hopes for many. We now fear that permanent residency is slipping further away from us, the report reads. UPDATE: On September 23rd, the Federal government announced in the Throne Speech: when people choose Canada, help build Canada, and make sacrifices in support of Canada, we should make it easier for them to formally become Canadian. Sadly, these words were not accompanied with real immigration changes. They mentioned its previously announced program to give status to a few refugees who work in health care during the pandemic. They also mentioned giving full sup...port and protection to migrant food and farmworkers - but did not say HOW they would do this. The government also said they will continue to bring in newcomers and support family reunification - but did NOT say if they would get full status upon arrival and if migrant and undocumented people will be able to reunify with our families. What’s Next This is not the end. We know that we are right, and that we are not ALONE. We must bring together more and more migrants to raise their VOICES! UPDATE: National Union of Public and General Employees calls for Full Immigration #StatusforAll! Many migrants are engaged in essential work, ensuring that families and communities are cared for. Yet the majority of this work is low-waged, and the majority of those who do it are racialized and women migrants This work is necessary not just during a public health crisis, but to transition our economies away from the impending climate catastrophe. Bad employers use immigrat...ion status as a tool to divide and pit workers against each other citizens against non-citizens to keep wages low and profits high. READ & SHARE: Migrant Workers, Care Workers, Refugees, Undocumented People, International Students demand #LandedStatusNOW! Maria Ocampo from Cceso Cceso stated that care workers’ fight for landed status has been going on for decades. While there have been improvements in the system, new requirements further create barriers. One such requirement is a language test that’s not just challenging but also time consuming and expensive. They’re allowed to take the exam four to fi...ve times, but they have to pay. How many of them can afford this? she asked. If they already worked for twenty-four months for their employers and they like them, and they did very well then what’s the problem?
