On November 21 2020 at approximately 6:30 PM, a young Indigenous woman wearing a health mask stopped at the BMO in 100 Mile House BC to complete a transaction. While waiting outside the bank, following current Health Orders as someone was already at the bank machine, the woman was approached by two males driving a white older model Volkswagen Jetta. The passenger was described by the woman as a 30-35 year old Caucasian male, with short light brown hair and a full short beard,... approximately 5'7" tall with a stocky build. The driver of the vehicle was wearing a ball cap, but no further description is available. The driver immediately rolled down all the windows and started coughing toward and laughing at the victim. Both males got involved as the music was turned up in the vehicle, so the victim could not hear exactly what was being said, according to her statement to Police. The passenger eventually jumped out and came toward the woman, all the while coughing and laughing. The woman was able to enter the BMO safely and complete her transaction without further harassment. As the woman left the bank, the vehicle was still in place and the music was lower. The males continued to make vulgar comments, such as "you're all going to die anyways" or "you should all die". The victim made it to her car safely and then took a photo of the vehicle. The woman then left the location. The young woman later posted this information on social media where it was widely shared and commented on locally. The victim came forward to Police on November 22nd and provided a statement and photo she took of the vehicle. Police have continued their investigation, including completing a video canvas of the local area(s) where the vehicle was suspected to travel, but no evidence was obtained to further the investigation from those locations. Please see the attached photo of the vehicle taken by the victim at the scene. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest hate or race was an aggravating factor in this harassment complaint, as the victim could not specify any remarks of that nature to Police, however, this is a very troubling event which greatly and understandably affected the victim a great deal. The 100 Mile House RCMP find this behaviour disgusting and unacceptable and notes that every person has the right to feel safe in their community and has the right to protect themselves via health protocols as they see fit without fear of harassment or vulgarity. 100 Mile House RCMP is asking for one or both males to come forward and speak to Police about this event. Anyone with information on this event can contact the 100 Mile House RCMP to speak with an officer, or they can contact BC Crime Stoppers if they wish to remain anonymous at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Please refer to file 2020-4142 when providing your information. S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen Detachment Commander 100 Mile House RCMP-GRC
