Carleton’s fall graduation festivities kicked off on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020 with an online celebration and are continuing all week with department-level tributes via video and social media. More than 1,200 #CarletonGrads2020 are being honoured this fall. The university-wide Fall 2020 Graduation Celebration video featured congratulations from many members of the Carleton community as well as special guests, including alumnus and actor Hamza Haq.

This fall, CBC Ottawa News anchor Adrian Harewood is bringing race and diversity to the forefront in JOUR 5508 Journalism, Race and Diversity. The new course connects Carleton students with prominent journalists working on a variety of media platforms, including web, television, podcasts and print publishing.

From a young age, Carleton University Master of Architecture graduate, Diego Juarez, knew he was interested in the intersections of art and design. At first, that meant treehouses. But through both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Carleton, Juarez has moved on to projects of a considerably larger scale since starting as an intern with Snøhetta, one of the world’s most well-respected architecture firms based in Oslo, Norway.

From Gadgets to Patents a lifelong fascination with machines has led Rawan Alkurd to a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering while also being awarded a Senate Medal for outstanding academic achievement.

Community Connections is a mentorship program designed to provide students with customized peer support. The program is open to all students who may be looking for more support during their university experience.

All People All Pathways peer support meetings are back for Carleton students and staff! Now virtual, through the Zoom platform, All People All Pathways is provided through continued partnership with the Community Addictions Peer Support Association (CAPSA).

Recovery Day Ottawa (RDO) will be online this year on Friday, September 25, 2020 from 3:00pm-6:00pm on Facebook Live. Addiction in general, persons with substance use disorder, and persons who use substances are incredibly stigmatized, which can harm the individual, their community, and our overall societal well-being. RDO aims to help end this stigma by creating awareness around this important social justice issue.

Academic Orientation Day (AOD) is a free, mandatory and important first step to prepare for your academic career as you meet faculty, staff and peers and receive important tools for a successful transition to university. This year, AOD is scheduled to be delivered virtually on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, with a complimentary resource course that has been customized by your faculty or department.

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a rapid shift to online learning even for courses that were never intended for online delivery. That shift won’t be permanent, but Teaching and Learning Services has been working overtime to ensure the university makes the most of this unusual academic year.

Carleton’s Students as Partners Program (SaPP) launched in January 2020, with 20 courses in the first cohort. By summer, there were more than 100 courses being redesigned in all five of Carleton’s faculties, making it the largest program of its kind in Canada.

Every fall, when students return to class at Carleton University, they come back to a changed campus: new programs, new faces, sometimes new buildings, and always new opportunities. This September, although the physical landscape may be familiar, they will begin an academic year unlike any other.
