Homecoming Integrative Counselling 17.01.2021

Happy Wednesday!! For anyone needing a little boost this second week of the New Year. Growth can be incredibly uncomfortable, even painful, especially in the beginning. Our nervous systems are hard-wired to build habits, because habits require less energy than new behaviour, and more energy meant (at the time our survival brain evolved) better chances of survival.... But for most of us, the fears and discomfort that growth provokes in us, does not point to a life or death threat (unless it does and then def listen to that!) So whether it is a job, a habit, a relationship, a way of relating to others or even a belief about yourself that may be comfortable, but that you know is holding you back (and you will know - anxiety, depression, stress + burnout) don’t be afraid of the initial discomfort that may occur as you move towards a life that is compatible and congruent with who you really are. That discomfort is just your brain trying to get you pay extra attention to the newness to make sure you’ll survive. And You Will!! You might even thrive You’ve got this #wisdomwednesday #growingpains #compatibility #trueself #youvegotthis

We hold ourselves back all the time...your life will change when you take your power back Sometimes this means speaking the truth, sometimes this means saying no, sometimes this means standing up for our values even if it makes you or others uncomfortable. Regardless of the form it takes, it means connecting to yourself, knowing who you are and having the courage for that to matter. Also Wisdom Wednesdays are a thing right? ... Well they’re going to be around these parts . I figured a weekly Wednesday post would be a cool way of sharing mental health tips and tricks, quotes and ideas that inspire me(and hopefully you) and asking questions that push us to grow! This is part of my 2021 resolution of paying it forward - please comment or share if you feel inclined to do the same I’m committing to posting every Wednesday for as long as my own advice holds up Stay tuned #mentalhealthmatters #wisdomwednesday #faceyourfears #faceyourself #payitforward

Whether you practice resolutions or are just ready to move into 2021 with the skills to put your visions into practice.... MICRO-HABITS are your answer: consistent, accessible, achievable adjustments to what you do in a day! ... Whether your micro-habit is challenging even one more self-defeating thought, eating one more fruit or vegetable, exercising for 5 mins more, stopping to be present for an additional 60 seconds before making a decision.... These changes add up over time: They allow our brain+body to gradually habituate to our new behaviour so that changes don’t overwhelm us + they allow us to prove to ourselves through each micro success that we are capable! All of these things increase motivation and make us much more likely to make changes for the long term without the sense of defeat that comes from focusing too far in the future You are capable and strong and with the right approach can have the life you’ve always wanted #resolutions #results #microhabits #selflove #selfcare #yougotthis

One of the foundational practices I utilize in my counselling is ‘functional inquiry’ - understanding how even our most distressing coping mechanisms and symptoms of mental 'illness' are almost always adaptations. When we understand the they purpose they serve healing becomes accessible and possible This article has some great insights into the adaptive basis of depression: https://www.psychologytoday.com//we-ve-got-depression-all-... Please connect or pass this along if you have any questions about this practice or know someone who might benefit from this therapeutic approach!
