We are fortunate to have dedicated rescue and shelter groups in our area! As we head into the holiday season this year, please remember that many of the more traditional fund raisers for these groups are compromised due to COVID-19. Check out their FB or websites to see how you can help this year!

Based on latest information about "Teddy" we are expecting to close at noon on Tuesday so that staff are safely home as high winds and heavy rains approach. We will be contacting clients about their appointments today. Although we do not know enough about Wednesday, we will post to our Twitter feed which appears on the main page of our website www.carnegyanimalhospital.com by 8AM Wednesday. What a start to the first day of fall! Stay safe everyone!

Here we are in Hurricane season with Teddy on the way for next week. Although its path is yet to be determined, being prepared is the best choice. Earlier reports indicated a strong hurricane season for 2020 (on top of everything else) and they are not new to us here on the coast! As you make your plans, we ask that you also remember your pets in your planning. Have your pet’s emergency kit ready! Don’t delay evacuating and finding a safe place because of your pet b...e ready to take them with you. There are many resources out there to help you with your planning but here are some basics. Have at least a week’s worth of sealed individual meals packed as well as containers of water dedicated for your pet. Did you remember the manual can opener? We hope you have already microchipped your pet, if not, label your dog’s collar with ID and contact information (waterproof ink) and the same with the essential pet carrier for smaller animals. Medications should also be packed and ready. Even the most obedient and calmest of pets can get worried during storm conditions and a slip lead or two is highly recommended whenever you are out and about. It is recommended that even inside this is a good idea so that your pet doesn’t escape from you. Pets anticipate a storm day before it shows up on the radar and may be stressed before you even notice. Pets can sense our emotions, so stay calm and speak in a soothing voice. The ultimate goal is to keep your pet calm, safe and sheltered until the storm has run its course. Stay safe everyone you’ve got this!

September is National Service Month - an opportunity to raise awareness and show appreciation for the amazing work trained service dogs do every day for the people in their care. We have been privileged to provide veterinary care for many different types of service dogs and truly appreciate the time and effort put in by organizations to provide these dogs for placement.

It's a very big day for many families in Nova Scotia, as they send their children to school for the first time since March ( and for some, the first time ever.)... Thank you to the teachers, bus drivers and all the other people who are working hard to keep our children healthy and safe. Be sure to give your pets a little extra cuddle time...it's an anxious day for many animals too, because just where did all the little people GO?

For all the cats that were upset that Dogs had a National Dog Day last week, September is your month! Every.Single.Day.

Labour Day Monday September 7th we will be closed. Labour Day especially important this year as we recognize the dedication of our staff who have worked through the pandemic. Reminding everyone early so that you can arrange for pickup of any prescriptions and retail needs before close on Friday. We thank you!

September News! As we move into September next week, we are happy to share some news with you! As mentioned previously, we have welcomed new team members Nicole and Jen to our reception team. We are happy to announce that we will be opening a few evenings each week for pet appointments as we transition our receptionists into split shifts. We hope to expand the availability of evenings as we move further into the fall. Two new veterinary technicians have also joined us, and ...we welcome Erica and Alison. As was noted in early August, Dr. Carnegy has moved on to full retirement from veterinary medicine. Although we miss him, as do many of our clients, we are happy that he now has time for personal enjoyment. Dr. Carnegy first arrived in Halifax directly after graduation in 1977 from the University of Guelph and pretty much was available 24/7 throughout his career. Our clinic has four veterinarians on staff to meet your needs. Our breeder community should be assured that our reproduction services continue as usual. Much like yourselves, we are unsure of how the ongoing pandemic will evolve over the coming months. In the interest of prevention and safety for you and your staff, we will continue with curbside pickup for prescriptions and retail with pre-ordering required. Our veterinarians are now meeting some clients and pets in the clinic on a case to case basis, with protocols in place. We will keep you updated of changes. Enjoy the anticipated beautiful days of a Nova Scotia fall, stay safe!

Although it is too soon to know if Hurricane Laura will have a serious impact on the Maritimes ( if any at all), it seems like a good time to review a little b...asic safety and preparedness. Storms are certainly not unusual in our neck of the woods! The Metro Animal Emergency Clinic never closes. We are open and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, that does not mean we are available to treat all animals regardless of the circumstances. During major weather events or when we are reaching capacity we see serious emergencies only- we need to reserve our resources for these cases. However, we are always available for phone calls if you are unable to reach your veterinary team or you are unsure if you have an emergency. As a pet owner you should ensure you have adequate food and medications to last several days, in case your family hospital is unable to open. We have food and medications at our hospital but we may not have what your pet specifically needs, as we are not a retail outlet. Plan ahead if there is a chance of your hospital experiencing a closure, especially if your pet is on long term or critically important medications. Sometimes your family hospital needs 48 hours to refill medications so be sure to leave enough time when you know a disruption may occur. Let's all take a moment to knock on wood that we have a peaceful hurricane season and smooth winter, but if not a little preparation never hurts! Blazin looks like he's ready for whatever Mother Nature throws his way

We wanted to share a few updates with you! Our phone system provider has almost solved our telephone system issues- yeah! However, please note that call volumes are still very high and we encourage you to email or text us through your client account when possible. Our new staff members are doing wonderfully and we will soon be able to open up our hours longer, thank you for your understanding! ... Our team has been working very hard, and we are pleased that we have now scheduled most procedures that were postponed during the restricted period earlier this year. We also are now developing our protocol for letting clients in with their pet for most types of appointments. One client per pet, COVID protocols to be followed. Curbside pickup still in place for retail and prescriptions. Our groomers are both available for appointments full time. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding the past months! Stay safe!

Yes, it is official Dr. Eric Carnegy has retired from active practice after 43 years serving generations of clients and pets in Halifax and surrounding areas. Although we will miss that daily laugh throughout the clinic, we are happy to see him have more time to enjoy personal interests. As many know, his passion in recent years has been in reproduction and we wish to assure our breeder clients that those services continue as usual. Our associate veterinarians will continue these services and Dr. Carnegy will continue mentoring for some time yet!

Historically, the long weekend in August is the busiest weekend of the year at the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic. Summer weather, increased activity, vacations... and general bad luck all play a part. People are out and about and take their pets with them, giving lots of opportunity for accidents to happen. Add to that other heat related complications plus all the normal things we see as an emergency hospital and it's going to get busy. Really busy. Animals are seen in order of severity of condition, not arrival. Life threatening and critical cases are always seen first, with other situations triaged accordingly. Some non serious patients may have a significant wait or be advised to seek veterinary care at their family hospital on Tuesday. It's just like a human ER...staff and resources are utilised on those who need it most. And about staff...our staff is amazing. Emergency medicine does not have down time and we never close. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week we are working hard to provide our very best in emergency and critical care for your pet. It is stressful and exhausting, so please keep that in mind if you have to wait to be seen. A lot happens behind those doors. Keep your pets cool, call your vet today if you need refills of medication and have a safe and fun Natal Day Weekend!
