A deep belly laugh... or getting caught unawares by something funny and not being able to stop laughing... (even if it's a little inappropriate- don't chide, you know exactly what I'm talking about!) This is the laughter that HEALS! Whether you're watching a funny movie, video or picture, spending time with friends, or just laughing at yourself...... The vibrations from those deep laughs shake out what is stuck at a cellular (and I would bet molecular and atomic) level too. Laughter is the sound of the heart, the sound of joy and it reverberates through our entire system rebalancing and resetting everything! So go, dear friends, especially if you find you're in a rut or not feeling well... find something to laugh about! #laugh #laughter #laughing #breakqi #heart #love #inappropriate #heal #healing #qi #godeep #rebalance #balance #reset #acupuncture #tcm #chinesemedicine

As we ramp back into work and 2021, remember to breathe! Let the air come in your nose, slowly go down your throat, and fill deep down in the pit of your belly. Hold the breath for a couple of seconds. Then let it slowly out. Feeling unbalanced? While you breathe, pick a word or two to meditate on: LET GO, LOVE, COMPASSION, GRATITUDE, or FORGIVENESS.... Feeling like your health could take a bit of a boost? Contact me to talk about some acupuncture points to meditate on! #breathe #letgo #surrender #love #compassion #gratitude #forgiveness #acupuncture #tcm #acupressure #tuina #shiatsu #air #bellybreaths #health #wellness

Is salt bad for you? Yes and No. Yes if it is the highly refined, denatured stuff with additives like anti-caking chemicals, potassium iodide, and sugar (that helps to stabilize the iodine).... No if it is whole salt. Salt is an electrolyte that helps to regulate the amount of water in the body (can you see the connection as to why it is a winter food... where water is the element of winter...?). Salt plays a part in nerve impulses and muscle contractions. Salt has a multitude of essential trace minerals. Salt is cooling, directs energy in and down. It strengthens digestion and contributes to the secretion of hydrochloric acid (part of gastric juices that help to break down food and kill bacteria). It also stimulates the kidneys, which promotes fluid metabolism and moistens dryness in the body. Thus in TCM, salt is Yin in nature. Salt is purifying and detoxifying and can help to counteract mild food poisoning and environmental toxins. Salt is alkalizing. Though salt can also be taken in excess, so as with all things TCM it is about BALANCE. Ingest enough salt but not too much. Too much salt (especially from fast food and highly processed foods) can lead to thirst and calcium depletion, which can cause edema or fluid retention, or damage the heart, arteries, nerves, bones, kidneys, and muscles, and can increase risk of stomach ulcers and cancers. But in moderate amounts salt can be so healing! Just make sure to get whole "sea salt" #salt #sodium #winterfoods #tcmfoods #tcmdiet #digestion #nerves #muscles #seasalt #wholesalt #kidneys #water #electrolytes #minerals #dontoverdoit

As a member of the onion family, and like all things in the onion family (chives, garlic, leek, onion, scallion) leeks are pungent and go to the Lungs. They promote warmth, move Qi, and expel stagnations (especially Blood). . They are rich in sulfur, which helps purify and detoxify the body. . They facilitate protein and amino acid metabolism.... . They help to clean the arteries. . "They are thought to foster excessive emotional desire and are not recommended for those seeking mental and spiritual refinement.". . And leeks in particular also aid the Liver, treat difficulty swallowing, and are astringent and can help stop bleeding!. . #leeks #onions #chives #garlic #scallions #sulfur #detox #protein #aminoacids #arteries #emotionaldesire #spiritualrefinement #healingwithwholefoods #paulpitchford See more

In Chinese Medicine the meridians (aka channels) are the pathways that Qi, or energy flows in through the body. They are likened to river systems that need to flow freely and unobstructed. If there is obstruction in the channel then there is disease and disorder- just as if a river gets blocked it causes disorder in its environment. If the channels are flowing then the body is healthy. Acupuncture helps to unblock these channels or keep them flowing steadily!. . #acupuncture #meridians #channels #river #stream #well #sea #spring #flow #movement #chinesemedicine

Welcome to the fall foods edition! I think it's been about a year since I've started these posts on Mondays and feel like I've come full circle in a way. And because I've thoroughly enjoyed doing them I think I'll continue!. . Fall is the time for harvesting and storing, for starting to sink in and down and plan for the approaching stillness of winter. Fall is an abundant time of year but it is also a contracting time too, thus astringent foods with heartier flavors are ch...osen in this time. . Autumn is the time of the lungs, so there is more emphasis placed on choosing foods that are thick with fragrance; nourishing foods that feed not only our stomachs but bring pleasure through our sense of smell too. . Because of the contracting nature of the fall season, there is also an emphasis on contracting (sour) foods such as foods that are pickled or fermented. Stay tuned on Monday's for more in depth sour food ideas!. . Cooking style during this time is also different. Fall is a time for internalizing one's focus, therefore cooking at a lower heat for a longer period of time is ideal. . Happy Cooking! (And eating!). . Oh, and stay tuned for another fall workshop coming up, details should be posted tomorrow!! . #fall #autumn #cooking #foods #healingwithwholefoods #paulpitchford #happycooking #harvesting #storing #sour #contracting #lungs #metal #smell #fragrance #feedyoursoul #chinesemedicine See more

Speaking of fragrant foods that nourish not just the body but the soul too... . Sourdough is a naturally leavened bread, which makes it easier to digest , causing less bloating, indigestion, thin blood, and weak intestines than yeasted breads. . According to Paul Pitchford:.... -the long proofing allows the fermenting agents to break down the cellulose structure and release nutrients into the dough, improving its nutritional value. -it contains lactobacillus, which helps generate the intestinal flora essential for proper digestion and elimination. -the natural bacterial action and baking neutralize nearly all of the phytic acid which occurs in wheat and other grains. -it stays edible for weeks and is more delicious and nutritious in five to ten days, if stored in a cool and dry place. . Have you tried making any bread during this lockdown? How\d it turn out? I am blessed that I have so much to be thankful for, especially the wonderful, supportive, soulful, beautiful, generous people that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. . My mom (especially), family, friends, colleagues, networking group, and support group. It is a firm belief of mine that we need a community to help us survive this crazy world- a tribe that supports us, loves us, encourages us to grow, and gets us into (or out of) trouble every once in a while too so and be... all that we can live a thorough and exciting life. . This to me is the definition of freedom: to be a part of a community that allows, supports, and pushes you to become the best version of yourself. And this is what I have. . Thank you for being you. Good timing for the need of inspiration and hope!. . Welcome to fall, everyone!. . Autumn is a time of decline; it is the time to harvest all the growth and energetic work that was done in the spring and summer; to reap the bounty of our perseverance.... . In Autumn, "in the metal phase, energy is contracting and moving inward both in nature and within us, supporting our capacity for inner reflection... we turn our attention inward to access our values and what our unique inner knowing wants to teach us. By values I mean the qualities that define who you are at the center of your being and the things that have to be a part of the way you live for you to be fulfilled. Reflecting on what you love, what inspires you, and what you spend time and money on will give you a clear idea of your values.". . Take some time, dear reader, in this season to breathe. Next on the Late summer foods list: soybeans! High in protein and in essential fatty acids, soybeans are cooling in nature and sweet in flavor, and are good for so much! Soybeans are a pancreatic, Qi and Kidney tonic, are good for the bowels, help to combat dryness, cleanse the heart, and improve circulation. They promote good vision and lactation, reduce fever, and eliminate toxins from the body. In their immature form: edamame, they can be eaten steamed.... In their mature form, soybeans contain a digestive enzyme called trypsin, which makes them difficult to digest. Therefore, having them processed through fermentation is best and they come in a variety of forms: tofu, tempeh, or miso. #soy #soybeans #edamame #tofu #tempeh #miso #protein #fattyacids #tonic #healthy #lactation #paulpitchford #healingwithwholefoods

Along with all of the benefits of regular potatoes, sweet potatoes also increase lactation and because they are high in vitamin A are very good for the eyes.
