Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to all those celebrating!
This picture pretty much summarizes 2020. Our year end party was held the only way possible: virtually via Zoom. It was great seeing everyone's face and sharing laughs. 2021 will surely be a great year!
It's day 1 of the ABI Conference and we are once again honoured to be a contributing sponsor! Acquired brain injuries are life-altering and often permanent for our clients, so it's been enlightening to further learn from professionals directly working with individuals who have suffered ABIs.
We are honoured to be part of this event at the new Ryerson Law School! Our immigration consultant, Macdonald Scott, will be discussing ideas about the abolition of immigration detention and enforcement, and the basis in law for these positions, while linking these ideas to prison abolitionist movements. Part of our proud history has always been to not only represent our clients, but to also advocate for positive social change in the communities we are a part of.
October is #WomensHistoryMonth in Canada so today we pay homage to our first female lawyer and one of our beloved partners, Kelley Campbell. Kelley joined our firm in 1999 and has played an integral role in shaping who we are while fighting tirelessly for our clients. Thank you Kelley! #becauseofyou
How it started vs. How it's going The law has definitely changed, some of us have more grey hairs than we did 25 years ago, and our pens no longer have to be shaken before use, but our fuel to fight for justice and our clients has always been the same
As the first Central American lawyer to be called to the Law Society of Upper Canada, Juan Carranza has built Carranza LLP based on social justice to be a voice for those who may not have one in the litigation system. With just over 50% of our staff of Latinx origin, it's an honour to continue to serve the latinx community. Gracias por su confianza y apoyo! #HispanicHeritageMonth
It's important to always ensure that you and those driving your vehicle have a valid driver’s license and that there is a valid automobile insurance policy in place. Lawsuits for injuries involving drivers who don't can get rather complicated. Learn more: https://t.co/hicf8q9imT
There’s been a lot of chatter at the office amongst parents regarding the uncertainties surrounding their children’s return to school. One thing’s certain, located at Keele and Finch, we’re in an area filled with Toronto elementary schools facing highest COVID-19 risk as per Toronto Public Health (TPH). Over the course of the pandemic, what we have seen is COVID-19 affecting people living in poverty and people of colour. A data analysis from TPH shows more than 100 elementary schools face the highest level of risk for transmission. bit.ly/2QyPoZS

As part of Toronto's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan, speed cameras will begin issuing tickets to speeding drivers starting July 6th. Fifty cameras have been installed in Community Safety Zones near schools and fines range from $5-$12 per KPH over the speed limit. bit.ly/3gnfiKC
Congrats to @AnuBakshi9 on her recent successful Reconsideration Arbitration that found four treatment plans reasonable and necessary and payable, once incurred at the Licence Appeal Tribunal! Decision here: https://www.canlii.org//2020canlii45/2020canlii45478.html

The Canadian health care system has left some of the most marginalized segments of our communities behind as many groups regularly find themselves uninsured, including newly-landed permanent residents, migrant workers, international students, undocumented people and returning Canadians. But health cares a human right and this should not be happening in Canada under any circumstances, especially not in the midst of a global pandemic. Denying access to healthcare is a threat ...to public health. We need to ensure universal access to health care that does not discriminate based on our immigration status or ability to pay. Ensuring access to health care for everyone improves the health and safety of our communities as a whole! https://www.nationalnewswatch.com//covid-19-highlights-a/
While this won't bring Olivia Sarracini back, some form of justice will now be served. These tragedies are absolutely gut-wrenching, and this particular one hits close to home as it happened in the community we're located in. Our thoughts are with Olivia's family and friends. May she rest in peace bit.ly/3h94NvX

Our lawyer, Anu Bakshi, lands successful result against Aviva at the Licence Appeal Tribunal! The Arbitrator ruled that D.S. suffers from chronic pain, so further treatment is reasonable and necessary to manage pain and anxiety. The decision confirmed that Aviva must provide meaningful medical reasons in denying treatment. https://bit.ly/2Ygn2qB

Canada is in no way exempt from the presence of racism and the undercurrent of it must be addressed. Conversations about its presence is a step in the right direction, so here are a few stories of personal experiences with racism as told by 5 brave souls: https://bit.ly/2Y0SxVA

A 31-year-old farm worker from Mexico with no underlying health issues died from Covid on Saturday in Windsor Essex County. Employers arent providing migrant workers with information or proper equipment to protect them from infection, and arent meeting provincial/federal standards for housing subjecting workers to overcrowding.
#blackouttuesday isnt about being silent; its about amplifying the voices of the movement! Lets remain informed and reflect on anti-black racism and how we can dismantle its discriminative practices from our lives and society. #theshowmustbepaused
This is such a tough time. So much anger and disappointment with racism in North America & the systematic oppression in place via policies that belittle human lives & institutions/powers that maintain this standard. We must do more as change is long overdue! #BlackLivesMatter

Abuse of power. Civil rights violations. Systemic racism. Its 2020. Enough is enough! This cannot be tolerated anymore. May George Floyd rest in peace "Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere" - Martin Luther King Jr.
Between April 3rd and May 4th, Toronto bylaw and police officers issued 598 tickets ($5.8 million in fines) for public health measures violations during the #coronavirus pandemic. As summer weather beams in and parks remain packed, the numbers for May will surely . https://www.policingthepandemic.ca/
The #Covid_19 pandemic has highlighted long-standing gaps in the Canadian healthcare system that continue to negatively impact vulnerable communities. We place our entire society at risk by failing to guarantee #HealthCare4All. Migrant workers, individuals without status and rejected refugee claimants are left uninsured, facing insurmountable debt in accessing healthcare, a human right. We are calling on Canadas federal government to work closely with provincial and territorial governments, health institutions, and public health leaders to ensure and support access to healthcare for all people living in Canada, including those currently living in detention, regardless of immigration and citizenship status. rb.gy/m0q3ar
This whole #pandemic can cause stress, anxiety and/or depression. Mental health and addiction supports are in place and available online, by phone or via text message. You are not alone! Check out some helpful resources below: bit.ly/35YZv0D
Were being encouraged to engage processes for virtual hearings with new notices issued, which have expanded the scope of matters to be heard by the Superior Court of Justice, effective May 19th. For a consolidated provincial notice and links to regional and Div Ct notices, please see : https://www.ontariocourts.ca//notices/consolidated-notice/
Due to the #COVID19 public health situation, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice will not resume in-person hearings until July 6th at the earliest. It will, however, continue to hear matters virtually, and expects to shortly further expand the scope of matters that will be heard virtually.
#HappyMothersDay to all the amazing mommas who go above and beyond for their children
With the weather getting warmer , the number of cyclists on roads will continue to increase, especially as physical distancing is still in effect. Staying safe is of the utmost importance, so we ask you to refer to The City of Torontos cycling safety tips: https://www.toronto.ca///safety-and-education/safety-tips/
With road collisions in Ontario down 79% and highway collisions down 62% compared to the same time in 2019, its not all good news: Toronto police have filed 222 stunt driving charges since March 23rd, up nearly 600% from the same time in 2019 bit.ly/3decQ7M
When #COVID19 requires #PhysicalDistancing measures to be in place, work meetings have to be held a little differently
A very special happy #DoctorsDay to all physicians who now more than ever have put patients needs first! Thank you for everything you have always done and for being amongst the heroes Canada has needed during these times, keeping everyone healthy and safe!
The office is mighty quiet everyday without these amazing people . Jack Johnson was right: Its always better when were together #TBT
Lots of pandemic posts lately, so today were switching it up a little and providing a sneak peak #lawyers picture of something were working on here at the office, where youll find a personal injury firm thats actually personal
Covid, physical distancing and this atypical lifestyle weve been leading the past little while can really take a toll and test our stability. Try to keep in mind that this is only temporary and appreciate all the blessings in your life! #TuesdayThoughts #tuesdayvibes
The Ontario Government has developed a framework of 3 stages that outlines the method and principles that will be used to reopen businesses, services and public spaces to responsibly lead Ontarios economy back to a strong position. Lets keep doing our part! https://bit.ly/2KFu6Xq
Anyone else find it enraging/embarrassing that someone running to lead a political party in this diverse nation of Canada make such ill-founded, racist and intolerant comments about Dr. Tam, a public health official whos been working tirelessly to help overcome #COVID19?
On this #EarthDay50 anniversary, skies are clearing of pollution, wildlife is roaming freely, waters are becoming clearer & flights are being globally cancelled. Mother Earth surely isnt complaining about Covid. Happy #EarthDay everyone! #EarthDayAtHome will be one to remember.
Want to help vulnerable people in Toronto during the #COVID19 pandemic? Below are a few ways you can get involved https://t.co/f8073YXSBz
Migrant and prison justice groups came together coast to coast yesterday to demand the release of everyone still being held in Canadas prisons, jails, and migrant detention centres, as well as demanding status for all! #FreeThemAllCaravan #FreeThemAll #StatusForAll #ContainCovidNotPeople
Ontarios the 1st jurisdiction in to amend restricting rebating regulation so auto insurers can provide temporary insurance premium rebates to drivers during #COVID19 for up to 12 months after the declared emergency has ended to ease financial pressure! https://bit.ly/34MtwjD
As life-changing as this #COVID19 pandemic has been, a lot of of us are blessed to be safe with a roof over our heads, food in the fridge, and our loved ones around us. Not everyone is as fortunate. The abandonment of the #homeless in #Toronto must end ASAP! #HotelsorHousingNow
Advocates have been pushing for Willowdale Welcome Centre to stop overcrowding and to provide proper services since long before the #covid19 crisis. Like all homeless shelters, they are powder kegs waiting to blow during the pandemic and Willowdale has blown. We need the city of Toronto to take action on its words and to move people into hotels as demanded by the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and the Shelter Housing Justice Network! https://t.co/BWVDNwolwg
To help Canadians cope with the financial impact of #COVID19, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) member companies are offering consumer relief measures via reductions of auto insurance premiums for consumers whose driving habits have changed significantly . Find out more http://www.ibc.ca//insurers-reducing-insurance-costs-for-c
Today is #WorldHealthDay and its only fitting that we extend our deepest gratitude to all our nurses, doctors, paramedics & front line health care workers for their heroic work during this #coronavirus pandemic. Thank you all for your sacrifices and for servicing our community!
Its already so hard for non/precarious status people to navigate through the Canadian system, and even more so during this #COVID19 crisis. Our beloved immigration consultant, Mac Scott, has put together some very helpful information to help with that: https://www.carranza.on.ca//resources-for-non-precarious-s
