Breast cancer doesn’t affect just the woman, it also impacts their families. I had no idea that the loss of a breast would be such an emotional loss, the other stuff was physically taxing. I identified with my breasts as a part of who I am, who I was. I felt like it was vanity, mourning my breast. Being diagnosed with breast cancer, I suffered guilt for my children, that I had failed them for getting sick. One of the biggest challenges was looking in the mirror and not reco...gnizing myself. This also happens during pregnancy, when you don’t recognize the body that you see, as you are constantly changing. This feeling and realization is what made Pat want to become a better designer and make pieces for women that can help them feel beautiful through every stage of motherhood and beyond. As women we take on the role of being supporters and caregivers, and when we get faced with something so challenging and life changing, we don’t always know how to ask for help. Women and mothers are typically used to being able to support others and not always sure how to support themselves in times of need. Mental health is something very dear to us at Carry maternity and supporting women through every stage of motherhood. Advocating for your own mental health is so important - and caring for yourself and breast health - women don’t care for themselves until they are forced to and hopefully the more we talk about our experiences and struggles this can change.
