After 87 years and 3 generations of family ownership #CartwrightJewelers is officially closed. As I embrace the next chapter - my retirement - I want to say a personal thank you for your support of our family business. I’ve enjoyed every minute of being your family jeweller and truly feel privileged to have been a part of the New Westminster community.... I have never known a world without Cartwright Jewelers. My Grandfather, James Daniel Cartwright, opened his very first store in downtown New Westminster on Clarkson Street in 1933 after an accident prevented him from going back to work as a fisherman. My father, Donald, joined him in the business and together they opened our flagship store in Uptown New Westminster in 1965. When I entered the family business in 1984, I had no idea that I would still be here 36 years later, saying good-bye to the community that has supported us for almost nine decades. I often wonder what my Grandfather would think about the legacy he created. Being a good community citizen has always been important to us and we've supported many local charities and organizations over the years. A personal favourite has been the CKNW Kids' Fund. I particularly enjoyed our annual Christmas fundraiser. We have also been long-time supporters of the nwhyackambassadors giving "The James Daniel Cartwright Diamond Award" diamond pendant to the newly crowned Miss New Westminster every year for almost 4 decades. Recently, we have also become their Premier Sponsor. These are just two of many local groups and events we have chosen to support. If I have one wish for my community, it is that you actively support the many worthwhile organizations that make New Westminster special. I promise you, the rewards are worth the effort. As I look back over our history, I am most grateful for many wonderful life long friends we have made. These are the memories I will take with me into retirement.
