Week 1 of the Festive Friday Freebies is a Statutory Holiday Policy! This has been updated to include the most recent Alberta Employment Standard changes and applies to any business. Easy to read and understand it explains to employees how they are paid for Stat holidays and what holidays are considered stats. Sign up via email, text, or call to get a copy.
I'm tired of saying it and you are tired of hearing it. 2020 is different. Employees are understanding about the changes you've made to keep them working--but don't stop to enjoy each other. The holiday party of 2019 may not be scheduled for 2020 but let's get creative. Zoom party? Solo-events? Family-based parties for staff so they can enjoy time with their wife and kids--not the work wife. Gift card? Turkey delivery? Flowers? So many options. How many people have started getting ready for Christmas? Decorations? Trees? Cookies? My Christmas cards are ready to be mailed out, my family gifts are wrapped and I will start sorting decorations this weekend. We all need a bit of extra joy this year.
Who doesn't like free things?
With the addition of COVID restrictions office hours will be strictly by appointment only until the end of November. I apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Call or email to arrange an appointment.
2020 has been about 8 months longer than normal and many of us are tired. Employees are tired too. For many, the appeal of working from home in pyjamas has worn off and they are craving contact with their colleagues. Supervisors are tired too and finding it difficult to keep spirits up. What is your company doing to keep employees engaged?

My grandfather fought in World War IIthank you. My uncle spent time in Koreathank you. My fiancée served for 23 yearsthank you. To all who fought for freedom, lost lives protecting it, and for those still fighting to maintain the freedom so many take for grantedthank you. I remember every year. ... Today is World Alzheimer's Day. This disease can be extremely difficult for the family. The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories staff are available for help and assistance. There is an office in Grande Prairie for local visits.
It is only 100 days away! Let's talk about Holiday Parties--they are definitely less than 100 days away. What will your company be doing this year? This will have a big impact on employee engagement. Let's talk! What do you think your company should do this year? #christmas2020 #employeeengagement#employeeengagement#
One of the least fun aspects of being 'the boss' is having conversations about performance. But it doesn't need to be. There are many ways to approach this type of conversation. If you need some suggestions and direction before your next performance conversation--call me. #performancemanagement
And another thing.... Yes, it is National Ampersand Day! Let's celebrate all things &. It's the geek in me that loves playing with fonts and seeing how all the symbols change with each new one. Except Comic Sans. There is no reason to every use that font. (It is like the Croc's of the font world.)
Labour Day weekend for many is just another day off but it marks a date in history that we should all be grateful for. The reduction of the work week to 58 hours and then 54 hours per week. 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation and 8 hours of rest. Enjoy your long weekend! Caseley Consulting is closed until Tuesday, September 8th.
I understand the need for businesses to have notice when an employee is leaving--training new staff is important, but there are limitations. "In the case of terminating my employment, I will give four months' notice to the employer and I will be responsible for training the new employee for my replacement." This is a bit excessive--IMHO. What are your thoughts?
It's the most wonderful time of the year...cue Staples ad for kids going back to school. This year might look a bit different at your home but at work, we still need to run our businesses. This month is all about Policy Development. (I heard that groan!) Why not leave the creation or updating of your policy manual to a person who enjoys policy development--me! Consults are always free and I'm always happy to talk policy.
September has always meant a new and fresh start for me so what better day to announce that I have filled my HR Administrative Assistant role. Please join me in welcoming Cindy to the team. I met Cindy a couple of years ago at GPRC and we seem to keep bumping into each other. Cinderworks Inspirations has been helping me with a few projects the past couple of months and now it is official. Cindy can create the most fabulous of resumes and cover letters plus be your very own Virtual Assistant. When wearing her Caseley Consulting hat she will be helping me screen resumes, make all those policies look good and generally help me keep track of myself. I am sure you will all join me in welcoming her to the team!
It's Monday! Maybe check in with your team at the end of the day today and see how it went.
I've seen a few candidates lose a great opportunity because of how they talk about their former (or current) employer. Think before you speak! I can give you a few tips on how to talk-smack in a professional way.
ZOOM! What's the difference between a Zoom interview and one conducted in personnot a lot. The same information as above applies when it comes to questions and responses. The difference is needing to make a more personal connection with people on the other side of the screen, and that works both ways. As the person conducting the interview, I will do my best to make you feel comfortable, but let's talk about you. What you wear to your Zoom interview is still important. Br...ush your hair, etc. your face may be on a large monitor on our end, and you could be bigger than life. Practice before the interview with the location you will be in and the lighting. Is there clutter in the background, will you be interrupted by kids, pets, spouses. Can we see your face, or are you covered in shadows? Get some practice with the microphone. If we can't hear you, then it will make it challenging to select you. Do you need to wear headphones? Is there feedback? Grab a friend and do a quick practice. Trust me. Things happen with technology. Be prepared. Make sure your tablet, computer or phone are charged. It would be embarrassing if your battery died during the interview. If we lose an internet connectionwe will get in touch with you. We will call or Zoom you back. An in-person interview showing up early but not too early is essential. Too early gives me the feeling you don't respect our time. Too late and againno respect. Ten minutes in advance is excellent. Lot's of time to get signed in, sanitized, etc. If you show up too early on a Zoom meeting, it can be awkward for everyonethe meeting host receives an email when you log on. Not everyone is familiar with the technology, and applicants have popped into other interviews, or they are sitting on their own in an empty room waiting and making themselves more nervous. For Zoompop in 5 minutes ahead of time and be prepared to stare at yourself until the appointed time. (If you are the person booking the interviewsmake sure to use different meeting invites for all candidates.) Be yourself. Have fun. Good luck.
In Person Interviews Congratulations you've made it to the finalist round(s). This is where your hard work has lead and the next part is easy. Really. This face to face interview is when you get to let a bit more of your personality shine through. As the person running the interview I want to confirm skills and abilities from your resume and see if you will fit into our environment. Let a little bit of your humor out and don't forget this is when you need to talk up yourself...Continue reading
