I used to live in shame, with an unspeakable pain of being HIV positive. I thought I didn’t deserve to be loved, and my life was never going to be happy again. Until one day I finally realized, that being HIV positive or negative doesn’t define a person, it’s what we think and what we do that defines whom we are. I already think I have a good circle of friends. However, once they find out my HIV status, many of them disappear from my life. For those who stay with me throughout all these years, I am truly grateful to have this strong relationship with them, and it made me realize who are real friends or friends just for party. I am Greg, an HIV positive physician who left my clinical practice in the 1980s out of fear that my patients would judge and avoid me. The recent loss of a close friend who hid his HIV status for many years out of fear of professional and social alienation reminded me that our workplaces and communities are still active with the fear of stigma. 33 years ago, Casey House's doors opened during the height of the #HIV/AIDS epidemic and our first client was greeted with a hug. In those early years, many people were dying alone, cut off from the support of family, friends, and the medical community because of stigma. Our founders believed that everyone deserved to be cared for with dignity and compassion, and three decades later that continues to be our guiding philosophy. Despite advances in treatment, #HIV continues to ...be a very real health threat for which there is no cure, and people still face a great amount of stigma including in health care. Today, as a sub-acute specialty hospital, we provide care that is tailored, comprehensive and emphasizes #harmreduction and quality of life. While #COVID19 pandemic has posed health risks for everyone, it has been even more dangerous for immunocompromised populations including people living with #HIV. As we enter Casey House's 34th year, we look forward to continuing to drive compassionate health care, break down barriers and #smashstigma, so that everyone can access judgement-free care. See more
