A passenger sent in a message telling us how one of our drivers, Gerry, had gone out of his way to help an elderly Haligonian this past weekend. "Hi, while out walking Sunday afternoon (around 245ish), there was an elderly person trying to cross the road at Robie and Almon. The gentleman was having a difficult time maneuvering his walker across. One of your drivers who was waiting at the front of the line on Almon jumped out of his car and assisted the person across Almon th...en proceeded to assist him across Robie (he even mentioned to the people help up behind him that he was going to hold them up for a few minutes). I looked quickly at the roof light and not sure if it said 329 or 529. Regardless, you have an awesome driver working for you. We love to share the positivity and met with driver, Gerry, to thank him for his kindness. Gerry was humble as usual and felt he didn’t do anything out of the ordinary, it was all in a days work. We couldn’t ask for a better brand ambassador in Gerry, he is always laughing, smiling, cracking jokes and just a joy to be around.

"I got my taxi license around 30 years ago and started driving with Casino Taxi 16 years ago. Before I started driving a taxi I always had a garage on Maynard street and before that I used to have a garage on Old Sambro road. I wanted a change so I sold my garage to a company that needed property downtown. I always worked on cars when I was a student, that’s my passion. I got my diploma in economics and took some mechanic courses in Iran. When the war started in Iran, I moved... to Turkey for a year and then the United Nations brought me to Halifax as a refugee. I got married here, and I have 4 children - two girls and two boys. They are very good kids and very driven. I tell them I want to travel, become an activist, get involved with physics and politics. I love physics. When I’m home eating or drinking tea, I have four laptops and all of them are on NASA. I love to learn about the galaxies. My dream is to one day build a big house on the 22 acres of land I own by the lake. I want to get horses, cows, and just stay there to read, write and be connected with the land. We received another wonderful customer compliment this week for Almases, one of our awesome drivers! She was the sweetest person and I had such an amazing experience with Almases and her natural warmth and kindness. Almases helped a customer with their Christmas parcels and not only went into the store to help, but also helped bring the parcels into the building and helped unload everything into the elevator. Not to mention she turned the meter off as soon as she pulled int...o the parking lot, not charging for any of the extra help she provided. We are so happy to recognize Almases for her wonderful customer service. It's moments like these that make us extra proud of our services and drivers.

Family, Legacy, Kindness What do you like most about Casino Taxi as a company? I really like having an opportunity to carry on my Grandparents legacy. My Grandfather & Grandmother worked hard to make a difference in the taxi industry in Halifax. They brought a strong work ethic, selflessness, compassion, and good common sense to the business. I enjoy doing my best every day to carry on their legacy. What have you gained from working at Casino Taxi? I appreciate the opportunity I have to help shape my work environment into someplace I’m happy to spend time each day. Good people, working together toward a common goal while having fun along the way. Going to work doesn’t feel like a chore, we’ve created something really special, an extended family. What's your favourite song to sing along to in the car? I like singing along to anything modern country, Eric Church, Old Dominion, Thomas Rhett. I love the wholesome stories that country music songs tell and enjoy singing along in the car with my boys.

I started as a Dispatcher with Casino Taxi in 1981. In my personal life, I hated talking on the phone - I’d do anything to get off of it - and here I was, working on the phone in the Dispatch center. Then we went from voice to computer. I was ready to leave when the computers came; now I could never go back. I could never leave anyway - I’ve had 39 years here, and if you ask the management team, they’ll tell you I’m not allowed to retire! Haha! They feel like family here. I’...ve gotten to know many of the regular customers so much in my time here they feel like friends too. We joke and carry on. There’s one lady who sends us treats almost every month and another lady that called so often she became a regular part of our day. I’ve taken the time to meet some of the regulars and take them to lunch or have tea. I’m always up for making new friends - I love being around people and on the go, whether it’s shopping, or eating out, or heading to a neighbour’s for Sunday morning coffee.
