Looking closer at the current situation, it’s hard to ignore the element of change happening throughout our school system. For many of us, these are uncharted waters that may take some adjustment. Now you’ve got over a month under your belt, you might be feeling a little frustrated with these changes and how they collide with the old way of doing things. This is perfectly normal. As we’ve discussed, that feeling often happens without your consent or directive. There’s s...ome good news here - you have a choice as to the context you put that frustration into. You either acknowledge it as a normal feeling that comes with adjusting to something new or you use it to lament how what is is not what was and stop putting forth an effort that’s commensurate with your goals. Don’t let this idea blow your mind - think about whether you want to let this frustration disempower you. We’ve all set goals and that moment occurs when we feel like we’re not on the exact pathway to success. This occurrence can sometimes allow the fear of failure to permeate our mindset. This fear of failure can be a potent force in getting us to stop working towards our goal. Look at this more closely - the mere threat of failure doesn’t have to be a reason to quit, it can merely be a cue to adjust - just like the plane’s navigation system; when an airplane is 3,000 m...iles from its destination and 0.75 degrees off course, the navigation system doesn’t quit, it just takes the acknowledgement of being off-course as a CUE TO ADJUST. So often we look outward when things aren’t going the way we want them to - this creates a missed opportunity, as so much possibility for enrichment comes from looking inward. As longtime Cassels Tutoring student/tutor/veteran @maffew_miklas said in his high school yearbook JC, thanks for everything, I learned a little bit of math but a lot about life. To me, the journey through high school isn’t just about learning math, science, french, art, music, etc. - it’s fert...ile ground for discovering yourself. I’ve made this a priority in the hours I’ve spent with the prime time students I’ve worked with over the years. I created this program to help students better understand themselves and the choices they make, many of which don’t increase the possibility of a prime time experience. We’ll take a deep dive into the mental structures that we rely on to make important decisions relating to everything from studying for exams, asking for help, and balancing academics with athletics and a social life. This is for any student in any program, looking to increase their satisfaction in and out of the classroom. This is a chance for you to discover yourself in a whole new way, one that puts you in a position of defining your experience of your schooling. This is a bit of a deeper take on the motivations surrounding your meaningful pursuits in life. Let’s be clear - we all have these feelings - but I want to propose the possibility that you don’t have your feelings; it’s the other way around. Very rarely do we consciously choose to feel a specific way - feelings tend to just happen - as humans we’re NOT conditioned to feel a certain way; rather, we put ourselves in scenarios that will allow the desirable feelings to show u...p. What’s the point here? If you’re not the one consciously choosing to have these feelings and they tend to just show up, then maybe we should critically evaluate whether feeling a certain way is an adequate justification for taking a certain action. Maybe if we can create a space between the stimuli (feelings) and the response (actions), we might be able to make decisions more in keeping with our interests. #masteryourself #biggerthanyourself #morethantutoring #bigplays #primetimethoughts

Week 2 of the new #musicmonday format and we’re bringing it back to a favourite - Tray Jack and his classic All That. I wanted to post this because this second leg of the summer can represent a bit of a reset and an opportunity to dial in for the fall. Whether that means getting into an exercise routine, crushing your next summer course, and/or changing your diet for the better, these types of meaningful changes will require a willingness to accept that the process will ...have some highs and some lows. The lows, though they seem undesirable, are real-deal feedback opportunities - these are chances to see what isn’t working, adjust it, so you can make it work. He also finished his first year at one of Canada’s most challenging undergraduate math programs (University of Waterloo). You might be asking, why’d you post this coach? I posted this because I wanted to show you that being authentic to yourself and participating meaningfully in school CAN co-exist. It’s simply a matter of choice; your current identity can still exist with the addition of some academic achievement.
