A message from our Chamber member Kootenay Savings Credit Union.... Support Local BC Program Coming to the Columbia/Kootenay/Boundary Country Regions Thanks to our friends at Columbia Valley, East Kootenay Community, Grand Forks, Heritage, Kootenay Savings and Nelson & District Credit Unions, Support Local BC is now available in the Columbia/Kootenay/Boundary regions. The six credit unions have partnered together to provide the funding for the successful online gift certifica...te marketplace where 100% of the proceeds go directly to independently owned, local businesses. What began in Victoria as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the changing business environment, the program has now processed over $400,000 in gift certificate sales for more than 1,300 participating businesses from across the province. How the Gift Certificate Process Works for Businesses Register your business at Support Local BC by completing the Submit your Business Form. Once your business has been approved, it will be added to the webpage for your community or region. There is no cost to you. To purchase a gift certificate, a buyer will click on the region the business is located (Columbia Valley, East Kootenay, West Kootenay or Boundary Country) and search for the business of their choice. Businesses do not need to issue their own gift certificates. After the buyer has purchased a gift certificate for your business, they will receive a confirmation email with a unique order number and serves as their gift certificate or certificates if they purchase multiple. This includes the business name and the amount. The buyer will print it off and bring it to your business or show it on their smartphone. On the back end, Support Local BC has a business portal that shows gift certificate sales for each business in real-time. Businesses use this portal to manage the gift certificates and redeem them as they are used. A handy step-by-step guide helps you get the most of the business portal. Funds for gift certificate sales are sent weekly via direct deposit using a service called WayPay. There is no charge for payment processing fees to businesses - businesses will receive the full value of the gift certificate. Gift certificate are non-refundable, have no expiry date and are available in $10, $25, $50 and $100 denominations. Buyers also have the option to send them to friends and family. We encourage you to sign up for this exciting program. To learn more, visit Support Local BC or call 1.888.772.4667. https://supportlocalbc.com/ https://supportlocalbc.com/pages/submit-your-business

Castlegar’s annual Winterfest celebrations will look different this year but don’t worry, Santa Claus is coming to town. The parade of lights, the lighting of t...he tree, family entertainment, visits with Santa at City Hall, and breakfast with Santa at the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex have been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and the community’s continued efforts to slow the spread. Santa plans to visit schools and daycares in early December to deliver holiday greetings, collect letters to Santa to take back to the North Pole with him, and share a small, locally-made gift made by Selkirk College with all children. Ho, ho, hoooo, I’m really looking forward to seeing all the kids again, says Santa, It’s been a tough year and I’ll be to Castlegar as soon as the elves finish making a mask that’s large enough to cover my beard while not fogging-up my glasses. The Winterfest Committee has partnered with the Castlegar News and FortisBC to boost community spirit by bringing a Making Spirits Bright initiative to Castlegar. Making Spirits Bright will launch Tuesday, December 1 stay tuned for more details & great prizes. The Winterfest Committee includes the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex, the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Castlegar.

PLEASE PARTICIPATE! First-Ever Castlegar & District Regional Economic Development Strategy Seeks Community Input -Survey seeks feedback on key themes generated... from interviews and workshops- August 24, 2020 Residents are being asked to share their ideas about how to boost the economy and quality of life using an Economic Development Strategy community survey. The City of Castlegar, Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce, and Regional District of Central Kootenay (Areas I and J) have partnered to create a long-term Economic Development Strategy focused on job creation which will guide efforts to attract new investment, and support and grow existing businesses. Work began pre-pandemic and was delayed while the community focused on the immediate business recovery needs as a result of COVID-19. The Strategy is scheduled for completion this fall. The work-to-date includes 50 interviews with community and business leaders, two workshops, and data analysis of competitive economic sectors. From this, key themes have emerged so the partners have launched a survey to gather feedback from residents. The survey includes visioning for the future, and sharing ideas about opportunities. Take the survey before September. 14th, 2020 at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CDEDS. We want this Economic Development Strategy to embrace big ideas that will set our region apart as we look to the future, says Castlegar Mayor, Bruno Tassone. We also need to focus on clear actions that will support our ambitious vision for the future. The Regional District of Central Kootenay looks forward to receiving constituent feedback on how we can all assist in developing a constructive, collaborative and efficacious Economic Development Strategy in Castlegar & Areas I & J," says Area I Director Andy Davidoff. Great things have been happening in Castlegar & District, including Millennium Park & Ponds, Sculpturewalk, Columbia Avenue revitalization, new development activity on the airport lands, new housing in Regional District of Central Kootenay Areas I and J, and forestry industry expansion, says Castlegar & District Executive Director Tammy Verigin-Burk. We will be able to achieve even more by working together. A business survey is also open for responses: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CastlegarRegionEcDevBusiness Background The Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce, who is leading the initiative, has retained Rynic to develop the Strategy. The Strategy will have a strong focus on accelerating the development of key sectors, including: forestry, creative industries, professional services, tourism, agrifood, and technology. A key insight has been the strength of the forest industry which generates 50% of all economic exports from Castlegar & District, is the third biggest industry in our area by number of jobs, is the fastest growing industry, has higher than average wages, and has a strong link to generation of jobs in other sectors. For further information, please contact: Tammy Verigin-Burk, Executive Director Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce 250.365.6313
