This projected started due to a flood that happened in the basement. All drywall and flooring had been removed. The homeowners decided to do a walkout from the basement at the same time. We moved a few walls to change layout slightly. Redid a lot of the electrical and added 26 pot lights throughout the spaces. Well after 130 sheets of drywall, 10 gallons of paint, 1800 sf of porcelain tile, completely custom made 45 wide wood door, 15 tons of armour stone, 250 sf of interlock pavers we transformed this unused basement into a comfortable, inviting space with a fabulous access and view of the acreage around it. All of this work was done in house by our employees.

Here are some after, before and during construction pics of a massive renovation for a home in the Preston area. Social media tends to lend itself to only show the good, positive and polished version. One might even say abit embellished. Well here are a few of the hiccups we encountered along the way in this project. 1. The concrete lathe and plaster was up to 3 thick in most spots. Our initial test hole to determine thickness showed only 1.5 thick. This led to a demo th...at was over budget by $4000. 2. The power line coming into house and meter had to be replaced unexpectedly due to insufficient capacity. Another unexpected expense. 3. Once the exterior plaster was removed in order to do spray foam we had to deal with critters and birds trying to get into house. You could actually see the backside of interior walls from outside. 3. The framing around every window and door had to be removed and replaced unexpectedly due to rot. 4. The original sheathing of house was basically horizontal tongue and groove 2x12’s that were anything but flat and level. The original intent was to reinstall these boards once spray foam and electrical was done. The boards either broke, disintegrated upon removal or were too uneven. This led to us having to put new sheathing on entire house. Another totally unexpected expense and schedule delay. These hiccups are only a few of the unexpected issues encountered along the way. We had a very defined budget from the customer we had to stay within and we managed to do it. (At our expense) This project was on the latter side of you win some and you lose some The main thing is the customer is happy and we can walk away knowing we did a project that alot of other contractors wouldn’t touch due to complexity and budget restrictions. Now it’s onto the next project! See more

A view from the 1800’s farm house renovation looking up through the house. If you look carefully at the old floor joists, you can see the bark that was left on the original timbers. We had to sister (reinforce) all floor joists, mainly due to extreme sag from over time. There was a section on main floor that had sunk almost 8 from the rest of floor! I

Here is a wonderful full main floor renovation that we completed. Here is a list of some of the changes we did. - removed a 30’ wall between the kitchen and dining room to drastically open the space up -raised a sunken living room floor to meet up with the rest of house -removed an exterior door and tied in new brick over the hole -totally reconfigured the powder room and laundry room into one space ... -new drywall on most ceilings due to irregularities in old plaster ceiling. -new vinyl plank flooring throughout -custom built fireplace with stone and custom mantle to hide cable boxes etc. -lots of fresh LED lighting to dramatically illuminate any or all areas This is a great example of taking a 50 year old home and giving it a complete update.

Here is the start of a fantastic shed/bunkie for some clients in the Puslinch area. This will be a 16x20’ building with loft and a 4’ wraparound porch on 2 sides. This will give the homeowners a fantastic spot to hang out with friends and their dogs. All with a fantastic view of the beautiful wetlands and green space behind their property. This will be their cottage away from home. Even if its only 300’ away!

The Glen Morris project is all wrapped up. We expanded 2 existing bedrooms and added an ensuite for these clients. The master and second bedroom were quite small and this is what they needed to make this their new home. This project uses ICF foundation walls for additional strength and warmth. These type of additions require far more than meets the eye. The new part must be an integrated part of the old structure. This involves fastening into existing foundation footings and roof structures. This way the new and the old become one structure as opposed to something just added on or beside. The 40 year old building code is much different than today so anything that is remotely involved with new structure must be brought up to date.

The roof lines are coming together. We have to bypass through an existing older addition to the original house structure to properly support the many new beams required. This involves lots of thought and planning as to find the best way to tie into the old house with minimal disruption to finished living areas.

ICF Building We are now certified to install ICF (insulated concrete forms). What is ICF?... ICF is an building technique used for many years now. It involves using ready made forms that are made out of a rigid styrofoam (same as coolers) and cement is poured in between to form the strength. A typical wall offers an R-Value of 22 without adding any conventional insulation. Why use ICF over conventional building techniques? (Poured foundation and wood framing) 1. Better insulation, R-value 2. More soundproofing 3. Stronger build in general 4.more environmentally friendly 5. Provides one of the most energy efficient and airtight wall systems available Where can it be used? It can be used in any type of building/structure but best to be used in projects that are required to be insulated. We will be starting a shop for a client and we will be using an ICF foundation as the concrete floors will be heated and this will greatly aid in the efficiency of the building. This will keep the cold temps from the ground outside transferring into the building envelope. For the next year we will be offering ICF foundations at the same cost as a poured foundation on any additions, new builds and outbuildings.

This is the start of an addition to enlargen the living room. Follow along over the next few weeks to see the total transformation of the front of this house. We are now certified to install ICF (insulated concrete forms) for foundations and entire buildings. This offers extremely high R-value on its own compared to conventional poured foundation and framing. For the next while we are offering ICF foundations at the cost of conventional foundations (roughly 30% savings) for anyone thinking about an addition, new build or outbuilding.

This was a wonderful large scale renovation. Almost every wall, floor and ceiling was redone to some extent. The layout of the entire first floor was completely changed to suit the desires of the client. New wiring, plumbing, drywall, hardwood flooring, windows and doors eliminated or relocated. Brickwork on the exterior was removed in some areas and patched back into other areas to fill voids where windows or doors were removed or relocated. ... These are the type of projects that Castle Rock Craftsmen Inc. specializes in. We are a in-house type of renovator where we have knowledgeable staff that can handle any type of project.

We started working along side some high school students for a co-op placement. It has been an absolute pleasure to have these eager, enthusiastic students get their feet wet in the world of carpentry. Owen, seen below in pics was the recipient of a certificate of achievement given out to a select few high school co-op students while he was under our wing. We are more than proud and excited to work along side Owen as he continues his apprenticeship with us as he works his way towards becoming a licensed carpenter. Looking forward to many years of working with you towards your goal!

These customers are having a third child but only have 3 bedrooms. So what do you do? You make a 4th bedroom. The first few pics are the new 4th bedroom. This was previously a large 3 piece bathroom. We raised the sunken floor, pushed out the walls, removed 2 linen closets, built a new linen closet and built a large closet in the new bedroom. We moved the upper floor open concept office to basement. We ran all new plumbing and electrical to create a great new 3 piece bathroom for the kids.

Good things can come in small packages... This 40 year old 12x8’ kitchen proves that small spaces can compete with much larger kitchens. The original kitchen had flat faced white melamine cabinetry. After removing everything (including drop ceiling!?) we set out to use every last inch of space. The first decision was to close in 2 of 3 windows in order to gain an extra 36. Luckily the remaining window had the best view of the creek running through the backyard. Since the e...xterior was brick we installed new aluminum capping and complimentary siding to fill on the old window areas. We installed 30 upper cabinetry up to the ceiling, lazy susans, angled upper and lower cabinetry. All of this was done in order to use every last square inch of space. To more than compensate for the loss of 2 windows we installed 6 LED potlights and LED undercabinet lights to light up this new kitchen. This project proves that great things can happen in small spaces! See more
