We wish the pandemic could have been avoided, but we are determined to find a silver lining. ... Without physical spaces, we had to get creative to connect with our clients and help them stay fit. When we pushed ourselves to find new ways to serve them, here’s what we realized: We’re a coaching business! We’ve discovered that people need coaching in a few main areas: 1. Exercise, 2. Nutrition 3. Lifestyle (think sleeping, healthy habits, stress management, personal growth and so on). Beyond exercise, we want to do even more for you, so nutrition is an area of increased focus for us. We can coach you to better decisions in the kitchen and provide resources and education to keep you motivated. Just like we improve squats in each session, we can help you reach for the snacks that will make you feel like a superhero in your workouts. We help people change behaviours to accomplish goals of all kinds. That means providing some accountability to make sure you head to bed at a decent hour or helping you create a schedule that lets you find time to blow off some stress. THIRSTY? When it comes to adequate hydration, many of us are aware that there can be a delay between being dehydrated and feeling thirsty. It's a good idea to stay on top of hydration and have a plan!... Water and fluid balance are key elements of deep health. Water comprises about 60% of our bodyweight and is essential as a: solvent and transporter for nutrients catalyst for cellular level activities lubricant and cushion throughout our body temperature regulator source of minerals HOW MUCH WATER DO I NEED TO DRINK? Most adults need about 12 cups of fluid per day - we actually get about 4 cups from the food we eat. A good goal is to aim for drinking about 8 cups, or 2L per day, along with eating high-water volume foods, like fruits and veggies. A bigger person will require more, as will someone who is ill and those who are involved with heavy physical exertion/exercise. It is best to make proper hydration a healthy habit out of this rather than focus on the number. HOW DO I MAKE IT A HABIT? Clear fruit-flavoured teas provide hydration if you struggle with drinking plain water, particularly in cold weather. Fill up a 1L water bottle and keep it at your desk or workstation, sip throughout the day, aim to refill and finish the bottle twice. Have an 8 oz glass of water with every meal. One Step at a Time A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The hardest part? STARTING. Once you have momentum and milestones, you’re much more likely to keep moving.... It’s something you can use to accomplish just about anything. For example, you can use it to create your ideal lifestyle or career. You can use it to complete a home-renovation project. Or you can use it with us to make a plan to accomplish your health and fitness goals. You can even use it to get through a very challenging day! With the pandemic ongoing, things are constantly in flux. So whenever we come up against a problem that seems overwhelming, we use this plan to find focus and then take clear action. Start by thinking about your goalyour desired end state. Call that Point B. Then think about where you are currently. Call that Point A. Draw a line between the two points. Now, map the steps that lead from Point A to Point B. Break the journey down into key parts. What’s halfway? What’s halfway to halfway? What are the major milestones? Note every step that will take you closer to your ultimate goal. Then take the first step! You can supercharge this process by getting someone else involved, like a friend, partner, mentor or coach. That person can provide objective insight, support, motivation and accountability. Or maybe you aren’t sure what the steps are and need an expert to help you lay them out. 'Neurons that fire together, wire together!' Mindfulness can be an abstract idea for many of us to wrap our heads around. Being mindful just means actively paying attention to our attention!... Just as healthy nutrition choices and physical activity are habits we develop, we can build the habit of exercising our brain! Try this simple exercise of a 'Mindful Coffee Break'. The goal is to engage as many senses as possible. 1. Purposefully prepare your tools - grind or measure your ground coffee and fill your water carafe or reservoir. 2. Bring your attention to the sound involved in pouring the water into the brewer or over the grounds. 3. Listen to the brewing and dripping or flow of the steamy liquid. 4. Smell the rich aroma of the freshly brewed java. 5. Feel the warmth of the cup in your hands. 6. Taste the smooth, bold flavours of your favourite brew. This exercise takes just a few minutes, but can begin the process of grounding mindfulness through mono-tasking. This simple form of stress-management can change your life!
