A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR This is the message I was hoping I would never have to share. A message about restraint and discipline to keep our community safe and ...viable, and our businesses open. With active cases of COVID-19, putting our community into an Enhanced Level of risk, (this means our risk levels require enhanced public health measures to control the spread); and the Premier’s message that added restrictions are now in place., I feel I have to ask you all to do your part. The Premier also said he’s sees this as our last chance to get our numbers under control before harsher measures are initiated. I know some of you are still skeptical about this virus. Many of you are fed up with living with restrictions. Maybe you haven’t caught the virus yet, or maybe you know someone who has contracted the virus and they weren’t that sick with it. But what ever your reasons for your skepticism, we are very close to another shutdown. It’s time for us all to come together as a community and start practicing the social distancing and the safety measures the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Province has been preaching for months now. If you can’t do it for your own health or for the health of those you love, do it for our community. If we don’t get our numbers down and we are forced to shut down again, our community may not recover. Our businesses that have just come out of a lockdown, may not survive another one. I’m imploring all of you to do your part. Without masks and social distancing, we could unwittingly spread the virus. We may be healthy ourselves, but we have vulnerable within our community we need to look out for. The infection rate, hospitalization rate and the death rate, are on the rise in the Province. The infection rate and hospitalization rate are on the rise in our community. We have to do our part to get our numbers back down and keep our community viable and safe, as we weather this pandemic. When in public wear a mask PLEASE!. Even when your wearing a mask be conscious of the 2 meter social distance. Public Health tells us wearing a mask doesn’t’ eliminate the need for social distancing, its another level of safety. I know it’s not easy, but the alternative is even harder. Our contact tracing teamcurrently made up of over 800 staffis working tirelessly to meet demand. However, we are seeing a sustained record number of new COVID...-19 cases confirmed in Alberta daily, a volume that is outpacing our contact tracing team. About 800 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the last 24 hours. The average case currently has approximately 15 close contacts that require investigation and management. We would need about 300 more contact tracing staff daily to keep pace with the current volumes. AHS is in the process of hiring approximately 380 additional staff over the next six to eight weeks. We will continue to pursue additional staffing and other innovative approaches; however, we need to make changes to our approach immediately, to address unprecedented volumes. To support this team - and the health of our communities - we temporarily need additional contact tracing support from Albertans. We will pilot this approach over the coming weeks, and continue to assess the impact on backlog. We ask all Albertans to consider limiting their social bubble. To the extent that we limit the number of contacts we each have, we can further reduce the risk and scope of exposures when a case is confirmed.
