Some of the variables that will dictate what set up you use are: 1. Catcher body type & athleticism 2. Pitcher consistency 3. Pitch type & anticipated pitch lo...cation and, 4. Game situation (Runner, batter & umpire location) If I know my pitcher is trying to get a pitch down and maybe even bounce it, I’ll adjust where my feet are, how my legs are positioned, where my body weight is resting or loaded and get my mind right in anticipation of a potential block. Notice how Mitch Garver pushes or pulls with his heel to get his belly button behind these balls in the dirt. You CAN block laterally from a knee down set up if you set up and prepare yourself properly. Video cred: Goodro Catching Baseball Company YouTube channel.

I was asked about Force Plays at my last camp. This catcher asked if he should start with his foot on the plate or should he start behind the plate. First of a...ll, how quickly the infielder gets us the ball will have a huge impact on the success of the play. With that said, I teach to become a first baseman. Start with your right foot on home plate, step to the ball and use the momentum of the step to gain some ground into the infield. This will help the catcher to get away from the base runner attempting to score and create a throwing lane. When we start behind the plate, step to the ball and drag the right foot across the plate, in my opinion, that will leave the catcher too close to home plate. That gives the runner more of an opportunity to slide into the feet of the catcher and disrupt the throw. By the way, we only have 5 spots left in the Catchers Tool Kit (monthly catchers swag and training). Registration closes tomorrow so get in now so you don’t miss out. I say it all the time... there is nothing wrong with a one hop throw. A low bad throw is better than a high one. Your infielder can only jump so high but if ...you bounce it, they still have a chance to make a play. Get rid of the ball quickly, put it near the bag and you’ll have some success. Sometimes you start on one knee and block on one knee. Sometimes you start on two feet and block on two knees. Sometimes you start on two feet and end up bloc...king on one knee. Sometimes you start on one knee and end up blocking on two knees. And sometimes, you stay on your feet the whole time... Point is, you do you and do whatever you gotta do to stop the ball from getting by. Timing is EVERYTHING when receiving. Scroll through the pictures to see how long Tyler Flowers waits to lift his mitt to receive this pitch. The ball is at lea...st half way to the plate before his mitt leaves the ground. This helps insure an efficient, single, down to up movement. Well discuss & work on this in detail at my upcoming events. By the way, where are my Richmond, VA area catchers? I’m coming your way in April! We already have sign ups and I haven’t even announced it until now!

Sound Up Bullpens are your opportunity to not only learn about your pitchers physically (the pitches they throw and how they throw them) and mentally (how t...o act when things are going well and how to approach them when things aren’t going well), but also gain their trust and grow that pitcher/catcher relationship. . Go to school catchers... THIS is how it’s done. THIS is a great example of #thelifeofacatcher and being a leader. . Video credit MLB & the Seattle Mariners.
