Here's the statement we received from the Newfoundland English School District in response to our student panel on online behaviour this morning: "The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is committed to ensuring all schools are safe and inclusive learning environments for all students. As such, the District actively supports and promotes events and initiatives within schools that help to educate our community on the experiences of marginalized individu...als. District schools do not tolerate discimination based on gender, race, economic status, sexuality, national or ethnic origin, age, ability, or any other life factor, and schools encourage students to be accepting and tolerant of others. This is a basic tenet of the Provincial Government’s Safe and Caring Schools Policy and the Human Rights Act. District policies include a Social Media Policy, which contains guidelines for students that every school provides to students at the beginning of the year and outlines expectations for online behaviour. These resources are available here for your review: https://www.nlesd.ca/about/policies.jsp. Additionally, since 2014, all students throughout the District have been actively engaged in learning appropriate digital citizenship as part of the Safe and Caring Schools Policy, with lessons on a range of topics from online behaviour, Canadian laws regarding online bullying and hate crimes, consent, privacy online commerce, and other important topics in our modern society. Much work has been done in recent years through our Safe and Inclusive Schools Itinerants and, more recently, our Director of Programs for Multiculturalism to open authentic discussions around relationships as well as restorative justice practices. In June, the District launched a Black Lives Matter Conversation Starter resource for classrooms and families. While the District recognizes there is much work to do, we are pleased with the steps taken thus far and are looking forward to including many partners and perspectives in this ongoing discussion."
