Applications open for financial support for arts and culture sector The provincial government is providing $2.1 million to help arts and culture organizations, which have been significantly impacted by COVID-19, meet their immediate needs. The COVID-19 Emergency Support Program for Arts and Culture Organizations is a one-time, application-based program to help organizations who either receive Communities, Culture, and Heritage operating funding or who regularly receive proj...ect funding from the department. Criteria for funding will be based on need, and year-over-year financials and projections. Financial assistance will be considered for plans that keep operations going, adapt spaces, and/or generate activity under the current public health guidelines. The application deadline is Dec. 7. Quick Facts: the Government of Canada has offered measures to assist sport and museum sectors, but funding for culture was of limited benefit to many Nova Scotia arts and culture organizations which were not existing clients of Canada Council for the Arts and/or Canadian Heritage during the pandemic, the department has also offered other programs to support arts and culture organizations, including a digital stream through the Creative Industries Fund and a COVID-19 Response Grant through Arts Nova Scotia For information on how to apply

Premier Stephen McNeil and Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health, announced that improvements are being made to ensure Nova Scotians with symptoms of COVID-19 get tested faster. As of Oct.1, instead of calling 811 as a first step, people can now do a COVID-19 self-assessment online (http://ow.ly/nHm550BI835). This will reduce the wait time to be screened for testing from 12 hours to about 10 minutes. If the online assessment determines that a person requi...res a test, the Nova Scotia Health Authority or the IWK Health Centre will call them within 24 to 48 hours to book an appointment. 811 will continue to take calls from people who cannot access the online tool or who wish to speak with a nurse about their symptoms. 811 has received an average of 1,467 calls per day and served an average of 1,024 patients per day since the beginning of September There are 26 primary assessment centres around the province http://ow.ly/kKS950BI836

While many Canadians have seen their jobs come back and have returned to work since the start of the pandemic, the Government of Canada recognizes that there remain other workers in sectors that have been particularly hit hard who continue to need support. That is why, last week, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, announced the introduction of Bil...l C-2, to create three new temporary Recovery Benefits to support Canadians who are unable to work for reasons related to COVID-19. A Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) of $500 per week for up to 26 weeks, to workers who are self-employed or are not eligible for EI and who still require income support. This Benefit would support Canadians who have not returned to work due to COVID-19 or whose income has dropped by at least 50%. These workers must be available and looking for work, and must accept work where it is reasonable to do so; A Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB) of $500 per week for up to two weeks, for workers who are sick or must self-isolate for reasons related to COVID-19. This Benefit supports our commitment to ensure all Canadian workers have access to paid sick leave; and, A Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB) of $500 per week for up to 26 weeks per household, for eligible Canadians unable to work because they must care for a child under the age of 12 or family member because schools, day-cares or care facilities are closed due to COVID-19 or because the child or family member is sick and/or required to quarantine. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce hosts two upcoming webinars on the Future of Transportation WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 30 | Future of Transportation: Air As one of the first industries to feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the air transportation sector, including airports, airlines, and others in that ecosystem, will undoubtedly be one of the last to fully recover. Before the pandemic, the sector employed about 141,000 Canadians and flew upwards of 70 million passenger...s per year. Today, that number has plummeted almost overnight as airlines and airports grapple with new economic realities. However, as Canada begins emerging from the depths of the pandemic, industry leaders are finding new and innovative ways to instill consumer confidence and start returning to pre-pandemic levels. Our conversation will address those ways and focus on how Canada’s air transport sector can continue to demonstrate leadership in this regard. Register here http://ow.ly/AAWQ50BAeNl TUESDAY OCTOBER 6 | Future of Transportation: Shipping Shipping is an essential industry in Canadian and global supply chains, comprising 20% of Canadian exports and imports. Contributing to about 2% of the Canadian economy, shipping operations play a major role across the country from coast to coast. As with every industry, shipping has been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This conversation will revolve around how the industry has responded to the pandemic and other significant events followed by a discussion on what’s next for shipping in Canada.
