This week check out one of the earliest skateboarding films! "The Devil's Toy" is a short 1966 documentary dedicated "to all victims of intolerance depicts the dawn of skateboarding in Montreal. A new activity frowned upon by police and adults, skateboarding gave youngsters a thrilling sensation of speed and freedom. This film - the first Canadian documentary ever made about the sport - captures the exuberance of boys and girls having the time of their lives in free-wheeling downhill locomotion.

CBRM ConnectArts Releases Community Sourced Colouring Book DIGITAL VERSION AVAILABLE NOW, PHYSICAL COPIES AVAILABLE VIA CAPE BRETON REGIONAL LIBRARY With pandemic restrictions and smaller than normal gathering sizes continuing, CBRM Recreation’s ConnectArts has worked hard to reach as many residents of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality as possible to foster creativity and artistic expression. This continues with the release of the ConnectArts Community Colouring Book, fea...turing 26 pages of drawings from youth and adults with connection to our region. ConnectArts facilitators spent the Summer collecting submissions via email, with participants aged from as young as 6 years old to others in their 20s and 30s. Submissions include artistic interpretations of Cape Breton and locations such as Trinity United Church in Whitney Pier to various portrayals of animals, people, and a message to follow your dreams. Altogether, over a dozen participants submitted art for the 26 page booklet. The ConnectArts Community Colouring Book is available now to download and print at http://colour.cbrmrecreation.ca. A limited number of physical copies are now available for free at the McConnell Library in Sydney, with copies being distributed to all twelve branches of the Cape Breton Regional Library over the next week or so.
I Can Make Art Like... is a series of six short films from kids perspectives on Canadian visual artists. They take a look at the work of Emily Carr, Andrew Qappik, Marcelle Ferron, Ron Noganosh, Kai Chan, and Nova Scotia’s own Maude Lewis. The National Film Board of Canada is a great and accessible resource for watching Canadian films. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing with you some films from NFB to introduce you to some of what is available to watch. "Love, Scott" follows the journey of a young gay musician from Nova Scotia who is attacked and paralyzed from the waist down, Love, Scott is an intimate and visually evocative window into queer experience, set against a stunning score by Sigur Rós.

Last summer our team created a Chalkboard Mural on the outside of the Sydney Miners Pensioners Club. It’s designed like a colouring book so bring your own chalk and make some art!
